EL PASO – UTEP men’s golfer Greg Yellin is set to compete at the 118th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill Golf Course starting Monday.
Since qualifying on July 10 to this year’s U.S. Amateur, Yellin has competed in a pair of events leading up to the event. Yellin played at the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship in San Francisco July 24-27 and the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association Challenge Cup on Aug. 6 at Red Hawk Golf Club in Las Cruces.
“During my last two events I’ve competed in, I’ve been working on driving the ball well, since it’s a long course at Pebble Beach,” Yellin said. “But really, I’ve been working on all parts of my game to sharpen my technique.”
Yellin is one of 312 elite amateurs from across the globe to play in the prestigious event with two rounds of stroke play Aug. 13-14. Each of the competitors will play one round on Pebble Beach Golf Links (7,040 yards/Par 71) and one round on Spyglass Hill Golf Course (6,993 yards/Par 72), vying to be one of the low 64 scorers to advance to match play.
Yellin will start with Pebble Beach on Monday, followed by playing at Spyglass on Tuesday.
The Round of 64 will start on Wednesday, Aug. 15, while the Round of 32/Round of 16, match play will be played on Aug. 16. The quarterfinals are on Aug. 17, the semifinals on Aug. 18 and the Championship Match (36 holes) will be played Sunday, Aug. 19.
As far as television coverage, FS1 will televise the competition Wednesday-Friday (Aug. 15-17), while Saturday and Sunday can be seen on Fox.
Yellin advanced to Pebble Beach after placing first in the qualifying round at the University of New Mexico Championship golf course in Albuquerque, N.M. on July 10. Yellin finished the two-day event eight-under par (66-70 – 136).
Yellin, who redshirted during the 2017-18 season, will compete for the Miners this upcoming athletic season.
