UAB shot 50 percent from the field, and only trailed for 47 seconds as they disposed UTEP 74-61 thanks to some hot 3-point shooting.
Sparkle Taylor led the Miners with 16 points, Tamara Seda added 12 points, and eight rebounds, but UTEP turned it over 14 times and went 4-for-16 from behind the 3-point line and were buried by UAB’s 3-point shooting.
The Blazers led 20-15 after the first quarter, but outscored UTEP 19-13 in the second taking a 39-28 lead at halftime. UAB Then opened up a 47-30 lead a few minutes into the third quarter after a back-to-back 3-pointers from the Blazers.
The Blazers hit 12 3-pointers, six came from the hot hand of Rachael Childress who finished with a game high 22 points.
UAB’s win avenges UTEP’s dramatic win in the C-USA Tournament last year in Birmingham.
UTEP will face Middle Tennessee who is tied for first place in C-USA on Saturday.
