Porter was hired in early April, replacing Eric Reveno who has dismissed after ten seasons with Portland.
Cantu was rumored to be in the running for the UTSA job earlier this year, which was eventually filled by Oklahoma assistant coach Steve Henson.
His departure from UTEP is certainly a surprise, marking the second assistant coach to leave the program in an off-season full of roster changes, and controversy.
The former USC head coach was UTEP's main west coast recruiter, and was also considered one of the top assistants in the nation.
The vacancy leaves UTEP with two vacancies on their staff, an assistant coach spot, and a Director of Basketball Operations will need to be filled before the start of the 2016-17 season.
