UTEP Basketball: 2016 Guard Chris Barnes picks up UTEP offer

Looks like the Miners are in the market for an athletic defensive stopper.

Compton, California 2016 guard Chris Barnes announced via Twitter last night that UTEP has extended an offer.

The 6'3, 180 pound Barnes averaged 12 points per game, and 5.6 rebounds per game in 16 games this past season according to Max Preps for Compton High School.  He earned SoCal Prep Athlete of the Week during his senior year in where he helped Compton to a 19-11 overall record this past season.

Barnes was a member of Bishop Montgomery's 2014 state title team as a sophomore, and is a top level athlete who figures to be targeted by the Miners as a perimeter defensive stopper.

Here is a scouting report snippet from ESPN.com.

"Barnes is an explosive guard-type who is evolving as a basketball player. His burst off the dribble is special and he can separate from his defender with ease. He can either explode to the rim for the dunk or stop on a dime and nail the jump shot."

UTEP is Barnes' second D-1 offer as Portland State has also offered.
