Expectations were high in the preseason for the Refugio defense led by UTEP commits Kobie Herring, and Trace Mascorro. But the two future Miners delivered all season as Refugio held off Crawford for a thrilling 23-30 win Thursday afternoon from Cowboys Stadium in the Class 2A Division I Championship Game.
Herring, the AP Class 2A defensive MVP, was one of the top defensive performers along with Mascorro. Herring piled up five tackles, and 1.5 tackles for loss in the win and was named defensive MVP of the championship game.
Mascorro also had five tackles, 2.0 tackles for loss, and a QB hurry in the game which gave Refugio their fourth overall state title. They limited Crawford to just 82 yards rushing, and only 10 first downs.
Both were Associated Press Class 2A all-state selections, and combined for some gaudy defensive stats this season.
Congrats guys on a historic season, and UTEP fans are certainly glad to have both heading to El Paso next fall.
