UTEP guard Deon Barrett was chosen the Conference USA Freshman of the Week on Monday.
The Lancaster, Texas native scored 25 points in 17 second-half minutes in UTEP’s 78-77 loss at New Mexico on Dec. 7. Barrett played only two minutes in the first half and did not attempt a shot. In the second half, he went 8-for-9 from the field, 7-for-8 from three-point range and 2-for-2 from the line while adding two rebounds, three assists and no turnovers.
The seven three-point field goals are tied for fourth-most in school history and tied the UTEP freshman record, set by Randy Culpepper versus SMU on March 12, 2008. Prior to his breakout performance, Barrett had totaled 25 points in the first six games of the season.
