UTEP senior guard Dominic Artis was selected the Conference USA Player of the Week on Monday for his performance in the Gildan Charleston Classic over the weekend.
Artis averaged 19.7 points, 6.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.3 steals in leading UTEP over three games at the tournament. The Miners beat Western Michigan (85-75), while losing to Wake Forest from the Atlantic Coast Conference (103-81) and Mississippi State from the Southeastern Conference (61-54).
Artis opened the tournament with a game-high 24 points versus the Demon Deacons. He made 8-of-12 shots, 3-of-5 three-pointers and 5-of-8 free throws while adding four rebounds and six assists. Against Western Michigan, Artis narrowly missed posting only the second triple-double in school history. He tallied 20 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and two steals. Artis went to the line a career-high 14 times in the game, making 10. He closed out the tournament by logging 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Miners went toe-to-toe with the Bulldogs.
Artis shot 51.4 percent (18-for-35) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-for-17) from the line and 68 percent (17-for-25) from the line while averaging 37.3 minutes in the three contests.
The San Francisco native leads the Miners in scoring (16.8 ppg), rebounding (7.0 rpg), assists (7.8 apg) and steals (2.0 spg). Artis rates ninth nationally in assists.
The Miners will play six of their next seven games at home, beginning on Wednesday against Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m.
