UTEP Women’s Basketball: Texas Southern Shuts Down UTEP 89-68

Sparkle Taylor recorded a double-double with 14 points, and 13 rebounds, but the Miners shot ice cold as they start their season 0-2 for the first time since the 2008-09 season.

Kaitlyn Palmer scored a game high 24 points for TSU leading four double figure scorers for the victorious visitors.

UTEP shot 36.1 percent from the field in the game, 5-for-20 from 3-point land, and turned it over 18 times in the loss.

Down just five with three minutes left until halftime, the Tigers turned in on took a 47-38 lead into the halftime break.

UTEP cut in to seven midway though the third quarter, but TSU outscored UTEP 44-30 from that point until the final buzzer to pick up their first win of the season.

Junior college transfer Axelle Bernard stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in a team-high 34 minutes of action for UTEP.

Freshman Zuzanna Puc nearly recorded a double-double (nine points, 10 rebounds). Freshman Jakeira Ford (nine points, three rebounds).

The Miners will wrap up their season-opening three-game homestand when they play host to Western New Mexico at 7:05 p.m. MSTThursday. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids.
