Former Ole Miss commit, and Petal High School senior Tirus Smith announced his verbal commitment to UTEP’s Class of 2017 via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon.

The 6’7, 230 pound Mississippi Native recently visited UTEP in early October, and had also been recruited by Southern Miss, New Orleans, Stephen F. Austin, and Alcorn State after decommitting from Ole Miss.

Smith averaged 15.9 points, and 10.6 rebounds last season as a junior at Petal High School and originally committed to Ole Miss back in January. He also has a younger brother who plays along side him at Petal and is an up-and-coming guard prospect.

He gives UTEP two combo forward commitments along with JUCO forward Roderick Williams, which was much needed in terms of depth, and versatility at the small and power forward spots.

How he fits:

  • Size
  • Rebounding
  • Toughness
  • Versatility
  • Around the rim scoring

UTEP now has four high school commits and one JUCO commit for the class of 2017.
