UTEP basketball: 2016 guard Deon Barrett verbally commits to UTEP

UTEP added a point guard with championship pedigree on Wednesday.

2016 Lancaster point guard Deon Barrett Jr. announced via his Instagram account that he has verbally committed to Tim Floyd and the UTEP Miners after being offered earlier today.

Barrett won a Class 5A State title last season at Lancaster, torching El Paso Andress in the state semifinals from three point land on his way to the title while averaging 15 points per game and seven assists per game last season.

At 5'10, Barrett is a physical guard who will bring toughness, and is one of the top floor generals in the Texas class of 2016.  He also has in the gym shooting range and already displays a high basketball IQ heading into his senior year of high school.

His stock has rose with his MVP type performance during Lancaster's state title run last spring which parlayed into a productive AAU showing this past summer as he led the high level Adidas Gauntlet Tournaments in assists  and in steals during the recent AAU summer session.

Barrett's commitment gives UTEP its first  2016 verbal commit with a quite a few offers remaining, and a pair of visits scheduled for this weekend.
