Christian Johnson told MinerRush last night that we was close to committing to UTEP, and today he officially verbally committed to the Miners after attending UTEP's mock game today.
UTEP football gets commit from Parkland LB Christian Johnson
— Felix Chavez (@Fchavezeptimes) August 29, 2015
"Coach Kugler he's such a personable coach, he doesn't lie to you." Johnson said. "He tells you how its going to be. He's not promising playing time, its all in my heart."
Johnson will more than likely play defensive end at UTEP, but has moved to linebacker this season and displayed the ability to possibly transition if need be in his debut as a linebacker last night.
As the center piece of Parkland's hard hitting and athletic defense that held Irvin to only 280 yards of total offense in a 27-14 win last night, Johnson tallied six tackles, and two QB hurries in the season opening win.
"Since I'm playing middle linebacker its kind of different for me," Johnson said of his transition to linebacker. "I think for middle linebacker moving lateral more faster, and reading the plays faster that's my main thing to improve, the defense did really good"
UTEP has always been Johnson's favorite since he received his offer in May. Army also extended an offer to one of the top FBS prospects playing under the El Paso Friday Night Lights in 2015.
But that chance to stay home, and play for a coach like Sean Kugler seemed to be an easy choice for the 6'3, 250 pound athlete.
"I would like to play some games this season as committed, Johnson said, "I like a guy that's not going to lie to me, and be upfront. And you know I would like to stay home and play."
