UTEP football: UTEP adds Boise State to 2021, 2022 schedules

Miners set to battle Boise State in 2021, 2022 home-and-home series.

UTEP and Boise State have agreed to renew the old WAC rivalry in the 2021, and 2022 seasons Sean Kugler announced today.

The home-and-home series starts September 4th, 2021 in Boise, and the Broncos return the trip September 24, 2022 when the teams face off in the Sun Bowl.

UTEP’s 2022 schedule will also include a road game at Oklahoma.

"We are pleased to re-establish our rivalry with former WAC champion Boise State," said UTEP Director of Athletics Bob Stull. "I think our fans will be excited to see the Broncos back in the Sun Bowl."

UTEP last played Boise State in 2004 when the Broncos escaped with a 47-31 win in the Sun Bowl, the first meeting between the schools was in the 2000 Crucial.com Humanitarian Bowl which started a string of five straight WAC matchups.

Adding intrigue into the newly renewed series, Sean Kugler was Boise State’s assistant head coach during the 2006 season when the Broncos went 13-0, and knocked off Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

"We’re excited to play a storied program that I have a lot of respect for," said UTEP coach Sean Kugler.

Boise State has ended the season ranked in both national top-25 polls 10 times in the last 13 seasons, averaging 11.5 victories during that span.
