UTEP Women Use Second Half Run to Storm by Louisiana Tech 88-75

The Miners used a strong second half performance to take the Friday afternoon matinee at the Don Haskins Center.

Sparkle Taylor had a huge day with 23 points and 6 rebounds and Cameasha Turner added 20 and 6 of her own as the Miners used a strong second half to storm by La Tech 88-75.

The Bulldogs came out swinging, quickly going up 6-2 in the first two and a half minutes of the game, and they would maintain that lead for nearly the entire first half.

A layup by Kelia Shelton would put them ahead 19-11, and La Tech would eventually lead by as many as nine in the early going before the Miners would get things going.

UTEP would use a 10-0 run over a 1:58 span that turned that 9 point, 30-21 deficit into a 31-30 lead. The Bulldogs would answer back with six of their own though, and would take a 43-38 lead into the half.

Stacie Telles got the Miners going with a quick three out of the break, and that would spark a 17-0 run that would put them out in front 55-43 just under four minutes into the second half.

La Tech would be able to pull it to within five at 56-51 just about three minutes later, but they'd be unable to get any closer than that. The Miners would use a 13-0 run to push their lead out to 18 at 69-51, and would eventually lead by as many as 20 before winning by the final of 88-75.

The aforementioned Sparkle Taylor and Cameasha Turner led they way for the Miners with a combined 43 points and 12 rebounds, while Stacie Telles chipped in with 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Louisiana Tech was led by Chrisstasia Walter who finished with 20 points. Whitney Frazier had a big day with 15 points and 12 rebounds, Kelia Shelton finished with 15 points, and Brandi Wingate had 11.

UTEP shot 48% from the field, while holding La Tech to just 36.9%. They also dominated the boards, finishing with a 49-28 advantage, but did commit a whopping 25 turnovers to just 11 for the Bulldogs.

The win improves the Miners to 11-13 overall and 6-9 in Conference USA, while La Tech falls to 14-13 and 9-7. Up next, the Miners will take on Southern Miss in a game that is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the Don Haskins Center.
