Sean Kugler confirmed on Monday that senior running back LaQuintus Dowell has a torn patella tendon which will end his season. Thus forcing UTEP into a deeper emergency running back situation.
Kugler also confirmed that Jeremiah Laufasa banged up his knee a little bit after the Rice game, and is questionable this week against Old Dominion. He is slated to practice, but will more than likely be a game time decision.
UTEP will possibly remove the red-shirt of walk-on freshman running back T.K. Powell, and quarterback Kavika Johnson will also see carries at running back this week according to Sean Kugler.
Laufasa is listed as the starter at running back, which is usually a good sign that he could play, while Treyvon Hughes is listed as the backup.
Derek Elmendorff was also banged up and did not play last week and is questionable again this week. Junior Anthony Kyles saw his first career action for the Miners in place of Elmendorff last week against Rice and is listed as the starting right guard for this week.
Right tackle Chris Thomas also missed last week; John De La Rosa is listed as the starter this week.
The Miners will use a rotation of Warren Redix and Jaquan White at punt return this week after last week's struggles in the punt return game.
UTEP will take on Old Dominion Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Mountain Time in Norfolk, Virginia.
