UTEP opens the Corpus Christi Classic with the new look Alcorn State Braves.  The Miners wore down Texas State last night, but the big story was on the injury front. Matt Willms complained of pain in his already injured foot, and Tevin Caldwell may miss significant time with a concussion.  Three point shooting, and stellar second half defense was the on court story as UTEP moved to 2-0 early in the season.  Lee Moore, Dominic Artis, and Earvin Morris were consistent throughout, while Jake Flaggert hit two zone-busting three pointers to put it away in the final five minutes. To replace the possible loss of Matt Willms, freshmen Brodricks Jones, and Paul Thomas provided important minutes in the second half in where UTEP held Texas State without a field goal for more than seven minutes.  Jones used his length on the defensive end, while Thomas showed some offensive versatility.

Alcorn and new head coach Montez Robinson are literally starting from stracth in a sense due to APR issues that played a part in their best player from a year ago transferring to LA Tech. Alcorn State returns one of the top players in the conference in Marquis Vance. Vance, a preseason first-team All-SWAC pick, posted averaged of 13 points and nearly eight boards a night to go along with his 21 steals and 19 swatted shots last season.  Vance scored 13 points, and grabbed seven rebounds in their opening season loss to Grand Canyon 79-46.  6'5 sophomore guard Reginald Johnson added 12 points, but the Braves shot just 30 percent from the field as Grand Canyon pulled away in the final 15 minutes.

Needless to say, UTEP should win big, but the growth, teaching moments, and chemistry building are keys to UTEP's outing tonight.
