UTEP football: Garrett Simpson leaves UTEP

After being demoted numerous times, quarterback Garrett Simpson leaves the program.

Sources on Tuesday confirmed to Miner Rush that junior quarterback Garrett Simpson has left the program.

Mack Leftwich has been diagnosed with his second concussion, thus ending his season and prompting Sean Kugler to start freshman Ryan Metz this Saturday against LA Tech.

Simpson appeared in 15 games in his UTEP career, and has only thrown three pass attempts in four seasons.  Recently he was UTEP's holder for most of this season after an ankle injury late in fall camp stopped his bid at becoming UTEP's starter to begin this season.

At this point we can confirm that Simpson has left the program, but future plans for 6'7 quarterback are unknown at this time.

Mack Leftwich was named UTEP's starter after Sean Kugler called the quarterback competition in fall camp one of the closest he has ever been a part of as a coach.  Simpson has not appeared in a game at quarterback this season.

As mentioned, Metz will make his third career start this Saturday, with Kavika Johnson serving as the backup.  Wide receiver Cole Freytag, and linebacker Alvin Jones will be the emergency quarterbacks for UTEP's final two games.
