UTEP Dismantles Loyola (N.O.) 96-49

The Miners were just too fast, too big, and too athletic for the Loyola Wolfpack as they rolled to a 96-49 win in Saturday's season opener.

Lee Moore finished with 17 points and 5 rebounds, and Dominic Artis flirted with a triple-double going for 16 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists as the Miners knocked off Loyola (N.O.) 96-49 Saturday at the Don.

It seemed the Miners got all the cob webs out in the exhibitions, as there would be no slow start in this one. They would jump out to a quick 10-2 lead less than 5 minutes in, and would blow things open at 21-2 less than 4 minutes later.

Loyola would spark a small run led by Ryan Smith, cutting the Miners lead to 13 at 27-14 with 7:28 left in the first half, but the Miners would turn it on from there.

Artis and Moore would combine for 12 points over the next 4 minutes, pushing the UTEP lead out to 27 at 45-18, and the Miners would eventually take a 30 point 53-23 advantage into the locker rooms.

The Miners would keep it going out of the break, extending their lead out to 36 less than 5 minutes into the final half, and they would coast to the finish from there. They would eventually lead by as many as 49 at 96-47 in the closing seconds, before winning by the final margin of 96-49.

Lee Moore led the way for the Miners with 17 points and 5 rebounds on just 5-8 shooting from the field. Dominic Artis managed to make just 4 of his 13 attempts, but nearly racked up a triple-double finishing with 16 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists.

Hooper Vint had a nice 15 point, 6 rebound performance, and Tevin Caldwell finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds. Matt Willms added 6 points and 4 rebounds in just 13 minutes of action.

The Wolfpack was led by Nick Parker who finished with 12 points. Johnny Griffin Jr. added 10 points and 7 rebounds, and Jalen Gray finished with 9 points and 2 rebounds.

UTEP finished 30-63 from the field, good for 47.6%, but knocked down just 3-15 from three. They also finished 70.2% from the charity stripe on a whopping 47 attempts. Loyola was held to just 30.4% from the field, 4-24 from three, and 11-17 from the free throw line.

Surprisingly enough, the Miners dominated the glass 56-29, and forced Loyola into 21 turnovers while committing 15 of their own.

The win improves the Miners to 1-0 on the young season, but considering the Wolfpack are an NAIA school, the win will not count towards any RPI ratings. The Miners will next be in action a week from tonight against Texas State. That game will be at the Don and is slated for a 7:30 tip.
