"Fili" Rivera Playing With Puerto Rican National Team

Former Miner great Filiberto Rivera is a key cog on the Puerto Rican National Team competing in the FIBA sponsored Centrobasket Tournament in Mexico.

Filiberto Rivera scored 12 points, and was 2 out of 3 from behind the three point arc in Puerto Rico's preliminary round 88-72 win over the Bahamas in the Centrobasket Tournament in Mexico last night.

The current tournament is a qualifier for the FIBA Americas Championships where the FIBA Americas Championship can qualify a country for the FIBA World Championships or Olympics.

Puerto Rico took home the Gold recently in the Centrobasket Tournament in 2008 and 2010, since 1965 los Boricuas have won Gold nine times.

This year's squad is loaded with Fili who is playing along side NBA veteran J.J. Barea, and former Siena star Alex Franklin.

Puerto Rico takes on the US Virgin Islands tonight at 10:00 PM Eastern in another round robin portion of the tourney being held in Nayarit, Mexico.

The tournament features national teams from Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean and is usually held every two years.

Rivera was recently playing professionally for the Vaqueros de Bayamon in the Puerto Rico BSN pro-league where he averaged 12 points a game, and 5.8 assists a game.
