Combo defensive back and UTEP commit J.R. Hall is in the midst of his senior year of high school and starring on one of the best defenses in District 10-6A for the Mesquite-Horn Jaguars.
Hall committed to UTEP back on June 7th and has had a really productive senior year in which I would consider him a candidate for All-District and All-State honors just six games through the season.
Horn is 5-1 on the year and led by a solid defensive effort they knocked off district foe Highland Park last week who hadn't dropped a district game since 2008, holding them to negative 48 yards rushing on the evening.
Highland Park has one of the more explosive offense's in the state, Hall and his defensive mates did a great job even garnering a quote from his head man in the Dallas Morning News:
Horn Head Coach Mike Overton told the Dallas Morning News:
"In the fourth quarter, the defense really stepped up and played with great intensity. "Our secondary … I just couldn't be more proud of them."
Hall is listed as a two star prospect by Rivals, and 247 Sports, and had offers from Grambling State and Stephen F. Austin, and a number of C-USA schools who showed interest. He also runs a 4.5, 40 time, and will provide immediate depth to a young secondary next season with his corner cover skills, and physical approach.
MinerRush: How is your senior year going, and can you share some of your current stats?
JR HALL: Its going really good, I have 36 tackles and 1 interception and 2 pass break ups. Looking for 80 plus tackles and at least 4 more interceptions by the end of the year.
MR: What was the main point that sold you on coming to UTEP?
JH: I saw that they were a program on the rise, and after the Tech game I was really impressed with the team.
MR: What do you know about the 4-2-5 scheme, and how do you see yourself fitting in?
JH: I know there's five defensive backs which means if I work hard when I get there I could see the field if I work hard.
MR: Looking at UTEP's defensive back depth chart for next year there will be a lot of openings for spots next year, do you see yourself competing right away for a starting spot?
JH: I don't plan on red shirting, but if I have to Ill just go in and get bigger and better until its my time, I see myself competing right away, trying to steal a spot.
MR: How would you describe your game? Can you play both safety and corner?
JH: I'd say I hit like a safety and can cover like a corner. My high school coaches teach a lot of man technique which I feel will really help me at the next level.
MR: Have you gave any though into what you might study while at UTEP?
JH: I'll major in Kinesiology, and I haven't decided yet but I want to go into the field of either Athletic Training, Physical Therapy, or become a Sports Journalist.
