CTF=WTF

I was thrilled when I learned of the Tim Floyd hire back in 2010. I remembered his coaching and recruiting abilities as a Miner assistant and I had kept abreast of his fairly successful career after he left UTEP. I never threw the "savior" expectation in his direction, however, I did think that under his guidance, UTEP basketball would continue it's ascent, even if only moderately. Now, only 3.5 years later, I am constantly asking wtf is going on with this team as they descend into one of, if not the, worst UTEP teams I've ever witnessed. I do remember the 6-24 season, which put a team on the court that was obviously about as bad as it could get. But the big difference is that expectations were very low for that team, whereas with this team, they were pretty high, even without IH, Spight and the JUCO kid. Aside from that abysmal season in 2002 or 2003 (I forget the exact year), this has got to be the most uninspired team ever assembled in EP. DH has got to be rolling in his grave.

When things get this bad, as much as I hate to say it, there is one person who is ultimately responsible. It is time for us, myself included, to take the blinders off. CTF is NOT the coach we all want him to be, or had hoped he'd be. When his body of work is looked at objectively, it is difficult to deny that Floyd has been an average coach at best since his arrival. When I'm really honest with myself, he's been down right awful in developing his players from year to year. His teams here at UTEP have never developed a trademark identity, aside from being known as junk defense specialists. Team chemistry and morale have never been so stifled as they have been the last 3-4 years. Even the casual fan can see that CTF is not utilizing the present talent to its fullest, and it's been that way every year that I look back to since his return to EP. Even with Barbee's group, CTF's first year back, these kids stopped playing for him towards the end of the year. To me, it appears that Floyd stifles rather than develops. Problem after problem seems to afflict UTEP bb. How can one program be so unlucky? I don't think it has much to do with bad luck, at least as much as it might appear to. I think we only need look at the foundation. From the high risk liabilities that Floyd signs, to the characterless wonders who he chases to no end. From the beanpoles that he brings in that gain 10 pounds in 4 years in a college weight room to the kids who hit everything at practice and can't hit the broad side of a barn in games. Floyd gets by but gets no further. With a compromised foundation, the structure will crumble a bit at a time. I think this is what we're really witnessing. Just when you think things can't get worse, keep watching. The wheels are about to come off. I just have a feeling. When I go back and re-read the words I've just written, it's almost as if I'm reading words someone else has written. It has not been easy actually reading the writing on the wall that nobody else seems to be reading either....and if they are! They sure as hell aren't talking about it. The illusion that this disaster of a season is someone else's responsibility has been exposed as the fallacy it is, tho. It is CTF's responsibility, and his alone. But he's had bad luck this year. He can't control all these unlucky outcomes and situations, you may be thinking. That may be true, and he may even have you fooled if you're just looking at the structure of things. I'm saying look deeper, look at the foundation. If you don't know what that means, you'll have to figure it out for yourselves or dismiss my psychobabble as non-sense. I don't care either way. I never thought I'd be saying this but I'm ready for CTF to hit the road. I realize that these are words I can't take back. I don't give a shit. I've said them. I mean them. Time to go. Let this be the proof for you who still believe in Floyd....it will get worse with Floyd as the captain of this ship. It's sinking pretty quickly. He may be able to pull a few patch jobs here and there, and may continue to fool a few die hard supporters, but keep watching. I expect to see a couple more key guys jump ship within the next year or so. Unless CTF lets go of the reigns, it is my prediction that he's gonna squeeze the life out of this once very proud program. The only thing I'd be sorry for in writing this is if it offends some of you good and loyal fans, but it had to be written. Fire away!
