With national signing day just hours away, the UTEP Miners received some good news when Lancaster High outside linebacker Trey Brown verbally committed. Brown is a ranked as a 2 star prospect by Rivals.com. ESPN rates Brown a 3 star prospect and grades him at a 78 and considers him the 52nd best outside linebacker prospect in the nation. MI was first to report the commitment and so far none of the national recruiting services have confirmed.
Brown was on our radar last summer, but recruiting news on him went dark soon thereafter. Texas recruiting expert Gerry Hamilton blogged last summer that UTEP offered Brown a scholarship. Brown, at that time, was ranked as the 78th best prospect in the state of Texas by Orangebloods.com (Rivals) in their Lone Star Top 100.
Hamilton had the following to say about Brown.
Very physical at the point of attack, Brown does a good job of taking on and shedding blockers. More than anything else, the kid is a striker and plays the game with ferocity.
Brown was offered by a score of FBS schools, including Memphis, Houston, and North Texas, and he drew interest from Oklahoma and Tennesee. He's simply one of the best uncommitted prospects left in the state of Texas so this was a huge get for UTEP's coaching staff.
