Julyan Stone update

If this story is common knowledge around here I apologize for duplicating info but I thought I should pass this on ...

A few weeks ago there was an update on Julyan Stone with the Denver Nuggets. I found this story from Nuggets.com that as of December 24, Stone was on the roster and made the team. There's a nice story about this here: http://www.nba.com/nuggets/features/julyan_stone_12_24_2011.html

However I also found that on sbnation that Stone was sent to the Developmental League in a story dated Jan. 3. That's not an insult or a demotion for Stone. They Nuggets are happy to have him but, and I think we all know this, his shooting accuracy needs improvement. The Nuggets seem to think enough of him to put him on the roster so I guess they believe he will blossom. Best of luck to him.

With all 12 teams having wrapped up their home non conference games I taught it be cool to see where we all stand. Despite having low expectations with only one senior and two junior college transfers UTEP (7-7) still sits atop along with Memphis.

Fact: In the Last 22 years, every coach that has put the ball in Mike Edwards hands 5 times or less they have always lost, Every coach that has put the ball in Mike Edwards hands 6 times or more have never lost a game, that is a Fact. we have Tape to prove it.

Fact : Run your Offense thru Edwards and you Will win C-USA, when you have a Randy Moss type player, you get him the ball. If Hall is smart he will throw Mike The Missle Edwards the Ball and he will be the Starter the next two years and break every record in UTEP history, just Like Nick Laimison did Last year, hint,hint.

Miners have the potential to make the nation look at there program, but if Edwards doesn't touch that Football 6 times or more it will never happen, Period.

I've taken some liberties with determining position and list year according to number of eligible NCAA seasons remaining. Let me know if inaccurate info is listed.

1st point of clarification - Roster, Division 1 schools are allowed 13 athletic scholarships which by my tally we have 1 scholarship remaining. (9 new signees + 3 current). Does the remaining scholarship go to a student athlete currently enrolled or are the coaches still actively pursuing another player? Or are we still short a scholarship from Barbee's tenure, (academic penalty). Some have commented on our lack of size however if you look at the full Roster height is no longer an issue with the recent signing of Vint.

2nd - Rotation,This is the fun part for the fans. I have not yet seen any of our incoming players in person. My information is based entirely on video, articles, websites and posts.

PG - Streeter 2 Marquis/ 3 Campbell

SG - Perez 2 Ragland/3 Cooper

G/F - McCulley 2 Nelson/3 Perry

PF - Moore 2 Washburn/3 Starke

C - Bohannon 2 Lang/3 Vint

I'm confident with the PG, G/F, & C starters whereas SG, PF and off the bench are all up for grabs.

3rd - Projections, Most would consider such high turnover a rebuilding year. 8 of the players listed have collegiate experience with 5 playing at the D1 level.

Which new player will have the most impact? - Streeter

Will the Sophomores take a step forward or back? - Forward

Will there be a sellout Don? - Yes, 3 (Home opener, NMSU, Conference opener)

6th Man award? - Whomever comes off the bench at the PF position

Will rebounding be an issue? - Middle of the pack, not league leader and not cellar dweller

Which tourney will the season finish? - NCAA, call me crazy but didn't we hire CTF for this answer?

With this last home game, I wanted to share some of my thoughts on the 8 departing seniors. The season is not over and some of you will continue your basketball careers. Regardless of the path you take after you leave UTEP, thanks for the wonderful memories!

~Claude "The BOD" Britten - Born on the Bayou to serve up soft sky hooks

~Randy Culpepper - RC3 - Most electifying and jaw dropping plays. The human highlight reel.

~Issac Gordon - "IKE" - A true leader both on the court and in the classroom. A future coach???

~Eric Munoz - "E" - El Paso's own. Represents the love for the game and true team spirit.

~Christian Polk - "The Assasin" - His shot leaves defenders clueless as to the wherabouts of the shooter.

~Wayne Portalatin - "The Muscle" - Hard-nosed Defense and the guardian of the paint

~Julyan Stone - "The Count" as in, he can play the 1, 2, 3 or 4. Amazing skill on both ends of the court.

Bubble War: What Do They Have That We Don't?

Many "experts" believe C-USA only deserves one bid. Upon doing some research I just dont understand why only one. C-USA vs Mid Majors. A-10, Colonial, Horizon, and West Coast are all pretty much guaranteed at least 2 bids. So the question is what do they have that we don't?

SB Nation College Bowl Pick Em' Recap

Well, the SB Nation College Bowl Pick Em' game ended as of January 11th, about 12:30 A.M. EST. That last win by Auburn was enough to push hothot Louisville Cardinals to win the game. Congratulations. I for one know that it will look like I picked pretty badly, but in reality I picked pretty well, picking 23 of 35 games correctly. Unfortunately, Almost all of those were under 25 confidence points and 75% or more of my losses had a confidence of 25 or higher...

Updated Conference RPI

Conference USA didn't do itself any favors last week, as it saw some of its better teams drop games that would have helped boost their RPI's higher than they are now. UAB, although they had virtually no chance at Duke, got blown out at Cameron Indoor, Memphis got blown out by Tennesse, and UCF who had climbed all the way up to no. 13 in the RPI gave one away to a rebuilding Houston team. Here are the RPI rankings for Conference USA teams this week.

Conference USA is making some moves in the RPI. Every team, except Memphis and Rice, is moving up in the rankings. Although some big moves were made by UAB and Marshall to get into the top 50, the biggest move may have been the one made by the conference as a whole. Conference USA made the jump from 11th to 9th in the overall conference RPI rankings, and they are quickly approaching the 8th spot which would put them behind the Power 6 conferences and the MWC. Not a bad spot to be in. This is definitely a very talented league, but one thing needs to happen. Keep winning games. Especially at the top. Our top teams need to continue to rack up as many wins as possible, and not give them away to our bottom feeders. Ideally, we'd like to have every one of our teams inside the top 200, but since that doesn't seem likely, we need as many teams as possible inside the top 100.

Final Football Thoughts

After the heartbreaking, can’t even be mad loss to UAB and with 2010-2011 college season coming to an end tonight. I put together my final words for C-USA.

WEST

1. Tulsa 10-3 (6-2) Attendance Avg: 20,379

Had the most success in the west. I still haven’t forgotten the 1 point 0.00 miracle hail mary for ECU to pull out the win in front of a sold out loud purple crowd. "What a way to start of the football season" ap. Tulsa finished with a seven game win streak. including a stunning dramatic road win in front of 81k, and their home finale big win over Southern Miss. Represented c-usa well beating ranked at Hawaii in their own bowl game. Very poor attendance for such a good team.

2. SMU 7-7 (6-2) 23,515

A good above average season with some tough losses against TCU, and Texas Tech. Both games were winnable you get the feeling if they could get things going they will be the next BCS buster soon. Lost to Army in their home bowl game in a good crowd of 36,742 but they should have pulled in the win for the conference.

3. UTEP 6-7 (3-5) 29,350

Started of 5-1 but finished 1-6. Bad year for our seniors with so much potential. A good upset win against SMU showed flashes of what we could have been. Great job by ESPN for hooking up UTEP vs BYU in the New Mexico Bowl. A lot of hype in El Paso and Abq large crowd of 32,414 with the majority blue and orange.

The only problem UTEP team never showed up to their party.

4. Houston 5-7 (4-4) 31,718

With the injury Keenum it was a very sad disappointing season. UH had BCS aspirations but instead failed to qualify for a bowl game. Despite not living up to expectations Robertson Stadium had five sell outs.

5. RICE 4-8 (3-5) 18,092

Had good win over in city rival Houston. Upset ECU 62-38 other than that dint not have a very good season getting blown out most games.

6. Tulane 4-8 (2-6) 21,792

Had a good win early in the season at Rutgers in front of 48k. Very consistent team in the fact that won 1 game then lost 2. Also had that win in the Sun Bowl coming in at 2-4 while UTEP 5-2.

EAST

1. UCF 11-3 (7-1) 39,615

Best team in the conference. Won the C-USA championship game at home against SMU. Grinded out a victory 10-6 on the Liberty Bowl over Georgia. Finished ranked #25 with so much success on the field surprised that they didn’t have a single sell out.

2. Southern Miss 8-5 (5-3) 29,400

Had a great season but were 11 points away from having an amazing season. Lost by 1 to ECU, lost by 1 again at UAB. Lost by 6 at Tulsa and by 3 to Louisville in the Beef o Brady St Petersburg Bowl. Did win at #25 UCF and crushed their two rival games against Tulane n Memphis.

3. ECU 6-7 (5-3) 49,655

Off to a great start at 5-2 losing only to Virginia Tech and North Carolina but then the wheels fell off finishing 1-5. ECU is ranked last in points given up. Including 76 to Navy and 62 to RICE. Did beat North Carolina St and participated in the Military Bowl losing 51-20 to Maryland. ECU did have the most faithful fans of the conference.

4. Marshall 4-8 (4-4) 27,046

Almost had that OT win against ranked West Virginia in front of 41k in their hope opener. Marshall finished strong but just could not overcome their 1-6 start.

5. UAB 4-8 (3-5) 18,291

Showed a little bit of promise with win over rival Troy, 1 point win over Southern Miss and the 2 point OT loss at Tennessee and 5 point loss at ranked Mississippi St. But never finished games.

6. Memphis 1-11 (0-8) 23,919

The shame of the conference. Finished ranked #1 in ESPN bottom 10. Finished 114 in points scored (14) and 117 in points scored against (40). One of the worst teams in the nation. Did pick up a win over in state rival Middle Tennessee who played in the Godaddy.com bowl game.

With all teams except SMU (vs Ole Miss) having finished up the non conference part of the schedule I accumulated every team's home games. As expected Memphis leads the way.

Conference USA Updated RPI

Ok, its official. I have no idea how the RPI rankings work. I mean, I know the formula. I just don't understand the way things played out over the last week. Memphis fell seven spots after a loss to no. 1 (rpi) Georgetown, and two wins. Marshall jumped 38 spots after beating no. 121, and no. 294, and So. Miss dropped nearly 40 spots after two wins versus sub 200 teams. I'm completely lost here. It doesn't make sense, but then again the forces that rule college athletics rarely make sense. Here are the RPI rankings for all Conference USA teams.

The conference as a whole remained the same as the 11th best conference in the nation. We now have 6 teams in the top 100 compare to 4 last week, but a couple of those teams are moving the wrong direction. If a couple of these teams can come up with some big time wins this week, this will look much better next week . We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

With 10 home games down and one to go before C-USA play begins its time to see how we stand. We are averaging 7799 per game with one sell out against Pacific. If you take away the two games against Mercer and W. Carolina which was part of the legends classic we would be at an impressive 9043. Its not a very attractive schedule with only Texas Tech and NMSU drawing crowds of over 10000. With nine home games left we really need to step it up once Tulsa comes to town Jan 5.

Miner TE Joins Basketball Team

Kevin Perry, a 6-5 225 lb redshirt freshman tight end on the UTEP football team has apparently joined the UTEP basketball team. He saw his first action last night in the final couple of minutes against the Western New Mexico Mustangs. Surprisingly enough, Perry was actually a pretty highly touted basketball recruit coming out of high school, before he signed to play football for the Miners. According to his bio on the UTEP athletics website, Perry was ranked the 38th best recruit in the state of Texas by hoop scoop, and the 97th best PF in the nation by Scout Inc.

Kevin Perry has apparently taken the place of the recently departed Michael Haynes, and is wearing no. 33, the number worn by Haynes in the early part of the season. Michael Haynes, who had family issues, was said to not be returning to the team. Haynes is the fourth Floyd player to never make any real impact for this Miner team. Deshun Watkins has also left the team, while Rashanti Harris and Desmond Lee never qualified academically.
