UTEP is facing former Western Athletic Conference member UNLV for the eighth time and for the first time since the 1993 season. The game will take place Saturday, Sept 8 at the Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, NV. Kick off starts at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT.

The game will be televised on AT&T SportsNet.

The Miners are coming off a 30-10, season-opening loss to Northern Arizona on Sept. 1 in the Sun Bowl. Their last road victory came on Oct. 22, 2016, at UTSA, 52-49 in five overtimes.

UNLV kicked off the 2018 campaign with a 43-21 setback at No. 15 USC on Sept. 1. UTEP was 0-7 away from home last season and is looking to snap a nine-game road losing skid dating back to the 2016 campaign.

THE OPPONENT

The Rebels were 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Mountain West Conference (third place in the West Division) in 2017. UNLV returned 48 letter winners and 16 starters (seven offense/seven defense/two kickers).

NM State alum Tony Sanchez is in his fourth season as head coach and has posted a 12-24 record.

UNLV’s starting signal-caller, sophomore Armani Rogers, was the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year in 2017. He was one of just five players in the nation to average at least 140 yards passing and 75 yards rushing a year ago.

Senior RB Lexington Thomas heads up the ground game. He posted 1,336 rushing yards last season, the fourth-top total in the Rebel record book.

UNLV players on preseason watch lists include Rogers (Maxwell Award), Thomas (Doak Walker Award/Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award), senior PK Evan Pantels (Lou Groza Award) and junior OL Justin Polu (Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award).

The Rebels were within striking distance heading to the fourth quarter at USC, trailing 19-14, before the Trojans outscored them 24-7 over the final 15 minutes. All four of the Trojans’ touchdown drives were under two and a half minutes. The two teams combined for 906 yards of offense (501 USC, 405 UNLV). JT Daniels completed 22-of-35 passes for 282 yards for the Trojans, and Aca’Cedric Ware rushed for 100 yards on only 10 carries. Rogers finished 12-for-27 passing for 97 yards and a pair of scores for the Rebels. Thomas gained 136 yards on 14 carries and Rogers chipped in with 82 yards rushing for UNLV, which picked up 308 yards on the ground.

THE SERIES

The Miners are 2-5 all-time versus UNLV (2-1 home, 0-4 away). UTEP and UNLV were joint members of the Western Athletic Conference from 1996-98, but were in separate divisions and did not face one another during that time.

The first meeting between the Miners and the Rebels came on Nov. 18, 1978, a 27-0 setback in Vegas. The teams squared off once annually from 1978-82. The series was renewed 10 years later (Sept. 12, 1992) with the Rebels’ 19-17 triumph at the Sam Boyd Silver Bowl. UTEP won the last meeting between the teams, 41-24, on Sept. 11, 1993, in the Sun Bowl. Incidentally, that was the Miners’ lone victory in a 1-11 season as they finished off the campaign with a 10-game losing streak.

UTEP’s Dana Dimel is 2-1 as a head coach against UNLV. His Wyoming Cowboys defeated the Rebels during the 1997 (35-23) and 1998 (28-25 OT) seasons, and dropped a 35-32 decision to UNLV during the 1999 campaign.

With a 1-0 in double overtime, the UTEP soccer team beat the Northern Illinois University Huskies following a penalty kick goal from Lauren Crenshaw (102’) Sunday evening.

For 101 minutes, Orange and Blue (4-2-0) took 25 shots-to NIU’s 14- but finished the match with Crenshaw’s goal that defeated the Huskies’ (0-5-0) goalkeeper.

11 shots were on target out of the 25 shots the Miners took. Four shots were all recorded by April Pate, Vic Bohdan and Crenshaw.

Crenshaw is the first Miner in the program history to put away three penalty kick chances in a single season in just six appearances this year. she achieved the team-leading three goals from penalty kicks.

Alyssa Palacios is only two shutouts shy of becoming the program’s all-time career leader in the category having notched her first shutout of the season and 19th of her career with five saves.

“We picked it up and got plenty of shots (25),” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “Their goalkeeper had one of the best efforts that I’ve seen. We finally got the goal at the end.”

It was a slow start for the Miners as the Huskies dominated possession of the ball leaving the game scoreless by halftime.

During the second half, UTEP kicked off the high heat on the Huskies’ goalkeeper (Megan Donnally) attempting 14 shots and seven shots on goal.

NIU’s Kylee Hermeyer was given a free kick from the result of a yellow card. Pate nailed the ball forcing the keeper to make a body bending save just seconds after the Huskies’ goalkeeper threw out the free kick.

After 90 minutes of action, the game went into overtime. Although both teams came out strong, their efforts were not enough, forcing the game to go into a second overtime.

A foul was committed by NIU defender Kelsey Chope in the 102nd minute of the game, which was originally signaled to be just outside the box. The center official awarded UTEP the penalty kick and Crenshaw ended the game with a victory winning goal for the Miners.

For their next match, the Miners will face New Mexico in Albuquerque at 7:30 p.m. MT Friday.

OMAHA, Neb. – The UTEP volleyball team (2-3), splits Friday’s billing with five-set masterpiece over UIC (3-1), and a tightly matched four-set loss to UMKC (3-2).

UTEP (2-2) captured a five-set thriller over UIC (3-1) Friday morning in the first match of the Omaha Challenge.

Junior outside hitter Macey Austin recorded a double-double (23 kills and 12 digs) to lead the Miners. UTEP leaned on career performances from freshmen Kristen Fritsche and Serena Patterson. Fritsche notched career highs in assists (46) and digs (27), the fourth double-double of her career in as many games.

Patterson registered 15 kills, five digs and five blocks. Nebraska native Mallory Yost dominated at the net, adding a career-high 10 blocks to the Miner effort. Alex Torres, Briana Bustillos and Briana Arellano all locked in double-digit digs for UTEP.

The Miners got off to a slow start to begin the first set when they fell behind 11-3. UTEP stormed back eventually tying things up at 24-24. The Flames and Miners would trade points, desperately competing for the set advantage. The performances by Patterson and Austin, with five kills each, led UTEP to an epic 29-27 set victory.

The five-set victory was the first outside of Memorial Gym since Sept. 25, 2016 at UAB

In the second set, UTEP and UIC traded blows until the score was all knotted up at 16-16. The Flames would tally off four straight points, and did not look back, taking the tightly-contested set 25-22. Austin added five more kills to her stat-line, attempting to surge the Miners.

UTEP got off to a blazing start opening the set with an 11-4 run. UIC would seize control with a big run to close the door capturing the third set 25-16.

With its back against the wall in the fourth set, UTEP staved off each run the Flames produced. The Miners eventually topped UIC in the back-and-forth set 25-23. Fritsche surged the Miner offense with 11 assists in the set.

The deciding fifth set followed the closely-battled pattern that the previous four sets had laid out. With the score tied at 7-7, Austin and Yost’s attack proved too much for UIC to handle as the Miners ballooned their lead to five 12-7. A block assist from Martine Kragholm and Fritsche, and an attacking error from UIC, finished off the match and earned the victory for the Orange and Blue 18-16.

“What a great example of fight in a team,” said UTEP Volley Head Coach, Holly Watt. “We had a slump in the middle of the match, but came back from that so determined. I’m excited for this team and what they can do.”

Match Two

The Miners (2-3) fell to the Roos (3-2), in four sets Friday evening in the second match of the Omaha Challenge.

Kristen Fritsche once again made her presence known with 37 assists, 14 digs and three kills. Fritsche registered her fifth-consecutive double-double.

Macey Austin led the way for the Miners recording 12 kills. Austin matches her career high in digs (11).

Arellano added nine kills and 11 digs to the cause. Yost resisted a team-high four blocks. Bustillos and Torres combined for 34 digs in the match.

The first set saw 13 ties between UTEP and UMKC. Each team was vying to set the tone for the rest of the match. With the score tied at 22-22, the Miners, led by Arellano, registered the next three points to collect the victory.

In the second set with the score tied at 4-4, UMKC generated a 6-2 run that would prove too much for the Miners to overcome. UTEP put together its own late-set rally, but the Roos locked in the set, tying the set count up at 1-1.

After breaking the 6-6 tie in the third set, the Roos raced out never looking back to capture the set advantage over the Miners.

UTEP jumped out to score the first four points of the set, highlighted by a service ace from Austin. UMKC would close that gap, tying the set up at 9-9. There would be five ties the rest of the set, and with UTEP down 24-23, UMKC put the finishing touches on the match with a kill to claim its third victory of the season.

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP soccer team received goals from Lauren Crenshaw (40’) and Anna Jimmerson (70’) in a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Grand Canyon on Friday night at University Field.

Crenshaw and Nicole Pugsley each recorded a crucial assist for the Miners (3-2-0). Kelsey Smith provided the lone tally for the Lopes (1-4-0) midway through the first half. Senior Alyssa Palacios notched four saves to seal her third win of the season.

“We started a little bit slow and then we our game changers came in and made a difference,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said. “I was really proud of our girls and it took a whole team effort. We needed to get a big win at home. We knew Grand Canyon was going to be tough. That was a big win tonight. It was a great crowd out here. We appreciate their support!”

The Miners opened the game with nine total shots in the first half, calling Grand Canyon’s Abby Burton into action with two saves. The Orange and Blue dominated the game with six corner kicks without conceding one to the Lopes.

Grand Canyon took an early lead when Smith finished a shot from outside the box on a ball played forward by Mikaela Mcgee.

UTEP applied pressure to the Lopes’ back nine with shots coming from Natalie Valentine, Vic Bohdan, Pugsley and Crenshaw. The Miners came to life with Crenshaw dribbling the ball into the box when she was taken down to earn a penalty kick. The junior buried her second penalty kick of the season putting her at 3-for-3 in her career.

The second half proved to be a physical contest between the two squads with 15 combined fouls. UTEP owned the second period with 12 shots at goal, while allowing three to be taken by the Lopes.

Grand Canyon’s Smith picked up a yellow card in the 54th minute giving the Miners a free kick 30 yards from goal. Crenshaw stepped up to take the free-kick on a nearly perfect ball that rose just over the crossbar.

The Miners took the lead midway through the second half off of a throw-in by Crenshaw, Pugsley headed the ball into the box, which was controlled by Jimmerson and tucked into the back of the net.

EL PASO, TEXAS – Northern Arizona topped UTEP in the 2018 football opener. Case Cookus completed 19-of-26 passes for 211 yards, and connected with Emmanuel Butler for a couple of scores as Northern Arizona spoiled UTEP’s 2018 home opener with a 30-10 victory in the Sun Bowl on Saturday.

Butler reeled in six catches for 138 yards for the Lumberjacks (1-0), who are coming off a seven-win campaign in 2017.

Junior college transfer Kai Locksley saw the bulk of the action at quarterback for the Miners (0-1) and was the team’s leading passer (120 yards) and rusher (50 yards). His 18 carries were the most by a UTEP signal-caller in six years.

With Derron Gatewood and Greg Long both out with injuries, the Miners started two freshmen in the offensive line in LG Bobby DeHaro and LT Zuri Henry. UTEP tallied 229 yards of offense (127 passing, 102 rushing).

UTEP fell behind 17-0 late in the second quarter after the Lumberjacks turned a couple of Miner turnovers into a touchdown and a field goal. UTEP got back in the game by scoring 10 points in the final 2:42 of the half. Quardraiz Wadley had a big second period for UTEP with 32 yards rushing and 26 receiving. His career-long 32-yard scoring run concluded a four-play, 75-yard drive and pulled the Miners within 10 at 17-7.

Jason Filley connected on a 24-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half to make it a seven-point game heading to the locker room.

But Northern Arizona put it away with a couple of touchdowns in the third period.

“I thought, most importantly, the turnovers were a big issue for us early in the game,” UTEP first-year head coach Dana Dimel said. “They set the tone a little bit, the two turnovers, one on the first drive and the fumble. Both of those kind of set the momentum for the game as it went forward. I thought overall, some of the first-game mechanics have got to get better. It was the first time all of us were together. There are some things we’ve got to improve on. We’ve got to minimize our penalties. We had 10 penalties for the game. To me, that definitely something we’ve got to work on and reduce those. And we had three turnovers. To me, as you start working for progress with the football team it’s all about the unforced errors.”

The Lumberjacks finished with 318 yards as the UTEP defense turned in a promising effort behind transfer linebacker A.J. Hotchkins, who registered 13 tackles.

“Statistically, I thought overall our defense played a good football game,” Dimel said. “They gave up the momentum, the play of the game was the touchdown to go to 17 points. We were in good coverage position, just an unfortunate play for us as a football team that got them to 17 and then the third down conversion at the start of the third quarter was a big play in the ballgame as well. But besides those plays, overall the defense played well enough to win. We knew coming in that these guys had a good offensive football team. They did enough things to help us win a football game today.

“Offensively, we didn’t run the ball as well as I’d like to see us run the ball. I think we can do a better job of being more consistent in our run game. Again, we’re meshing our offensive line together.”

The special teams star for UTEP was senior Terry Juniel with 124 all-purpose yards, including 96 on kickoff returns.

The Miners will play their first road game of the season and seek their first victory under Dimel at UNLV next Saturday (Sept. 8). The game will be televised on AT&T Sportsnet beginning at 7 p.m. MT.

“The main thing I drew from the game, we didn’t play near as well as I would like us to play. That goes without saying,” Dimel said. “But I liked the way the kids fought. I’m pleased with that part of it. I told them in the locker room, ‘This isn’t going to define us. This is just the beginning.’ And now you’re going to be measured on how much you improve week to week.”
