Conference USA/UTEP Men's & Women's Open Gamethread

It was a wild day on day 1 of the Conference USA tournament. (7) Rice and (10) ECU traded blows in the morning game, with the Pirates finally outlasting the Owls 68-66. ECU now meets (2) Southern Miss at 11:00 a.m. MT on Thursday. The second game of the day was closer than most thought it would be for about 30 minutes as (11) SMU stayed within striking distance of (6) Marshall before the Herd ran away with it in the final ten minutes. That one ended 74-56 in favor of Marshall. The Herd now look ahead to taking on (3) Tulsa at 1:30 p.m. MT.

The third game of the day featured our (8) UTEP Miners versus the (9) Houston Cougars, and for about 30 minutes most of us were, well hating our lives. Ok, maybe not, but the Miners put on another drama filled show, coming back from 8 points down with under nine to play to force overtime. UTEP controlled the OT period and stole one away 67-62, and now advance to take on the host (1) Memphis Tigers at 5:30 p.m MT. And, the last game of the day went to the (5) UAB Blazers, who dropped the (12) Tulane Green Wave 72-64 in the late game. They'll get (4) UCF in the same time slot tonight.

Conference USA/UTEP vs. Houston Open Gamethread

Considering its tourney time, its probably best just to have an open thread all day, so that's exactly what we'll do. The Conference USA tournament opens up with East Carolina vs. Rice at 11:00 a.m. MT, so don't be late. Of course, if you can't make it for the early games, the Miners will tip somewhere around 5:30 MT, so make sure you don't miss that one. Anyway, here's a preview for the day.

(10) East Carolina Pirates (14-15, 5-11) vs. (7) Rice Owls (17-14, 8-8) - Tip slated for 11:00 a.m. MT

The Pirates enter the contest with a 2-5 mark in their last 7, but they have won their last two including games against Marshall and Tulane. Junior G Miguel Paul sets the pace for ECU, averaging 15 points and 5.8 assists per game. The Owls come in alternating wins and losses over their last six, and they also lost at home to Houston 76-75 most recently. Junior F Arsalan Kazemi leads the way for Rice, averaging 12.5 points and 10.2 rebounds a game. I wouldn't expect an "upset", but the Pirates have already beat Rice once this season, by 14.

UTEP @ SMU Open Gamethread

The game will not play into C-USA tourney seeding for the Miners, as they are locked into the 8th spot, but SMU could still either be the 11th or 12th seed.

UTEP leads the overall series with the Mustangs 25-14, and the Miners have won 17 of the last 18 matchups between the two schools, and have gone 13-1 since joining Conference USA. The series is tied 8-8 in games played in Dallas, but the Miners have won 7 of the last 8 of those as well. Coach Tim Floyd holds a 3-0 all time mark against SMU.

Tulane @ UTEP Open Gamethread

The Tulane Green Wave (15-8, 3-6) and the UTEP Miners (11-13, 4-6) get together tonight in a Conference USA matchup at the Don Haskins Center. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. MT, and members from the 1991-92 UTEP team that reached the Sweet 16 will be honored at halftime.

The two teams last met on January 21st at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans. While the game was close most of the way, the Green Wave used a 10-2 in the second half to open up a 5 point lead, and they never gave it back. That night Tulane handed the Miners a 66-58 loss, which started the Miners' recent 4 game skid.

Tulsa @ UTEP Open Gamethread

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane (14-9, 7-2) come to town tonight to take on the UTEP Miners (10-13, 3-6) in a Conference USA matchup at the Don. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. MT, and the game will be carried nationally on CBS College Sports. Unfortunately, the UTEP all-access site will not be broadcasting the game.

The Miners and the Hurricane have met 44 times previously, with Tulsa holding a 28-16 advantage. The Miners, however, have won 5 of the last 7 contests, after being swept by Tulsa between 2007 and 2009. These two teams last met in on January 11th at the Donald W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa. With just under 10 minutes left, two Michael Perez free throws cut the lead to 1, but an 11-3 run put the game out of reach, as the Hurricane pulled out the 59-48 vicotry.

Los Mineros de UTEP (10-12, 3-5) square off against the UAB Blazers (8-13, 3-5) in a Conference USA matchup tonight at the Don. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. MT, and it will be "Noche Latina". Also, the Miners will be sporting white jerseys that read "Mineros", and the first 3,500 fans will receive "replica jersey koozies" with Mineros printed on it. So, come out and enjoy the fun.

The two teams have faced each other 12 times previously, with each school taking 6 wins. The last time they met was January 8th, 2011, and it was a game for the ages.
