Extremely Interesting Read on UT Chancellor's Decision

+

CBS Houston has released an article about the University of Texas System Chancellor's decision to cancel the Chavez Jr. vs. Lee fight at the Sun Bowl. They report that customs and homeland security had done a risk assessment, and had passed that information on to UTEP police. The report also states that the cartels had declared the boxing match a "neutral" zone, but that members of multiple cartels would be present. More info on this and the boxing match in general still to come.

Floyd Not Listed as Candidate at Southern Miss

+

Today ESPN's Andy Katz wrote an updated blog piece on the candidates for the head coaching job at Southern Miss. While UTEP coach Tim Floyd's name had been thrown in the mix at the beginning of the process, it has been nowhere to be found as of late. USM seems to be down to Morehead State's Donnie Tyndall, former UTEP and Nebraska coach Doc Sadler, and Mississippi Valley State's Sean Woods. Woods seems to be the lead candidate.

2012-2013 UTEP Basketball Schedule Taking Shape

+

The 2012-13 UTEP basketball schedule is still far from complete, but UTEP athletics has released a quick piece discussing how it's all coming together. The slate is quickly becoming one of the tougher ones we've seen in years, perhaps decades. The Miners will take on both UNLV and Oregon in the Don, as well New Mexico State in their regular home and home series. The Miners are currently in negotiations to get a home game against Oral Roberts, and will also take part in November's Old Spice Classic in Orlando. That tournament features Clemson, Davidson, Gonzaga, Marist, Oklahoma, UTEP, Vanderbilt, and West Virginia. CTF did comment on the struggles of getting quality opponents into the Sun Bowl tournament, and did also mention that he expected to field some quality teams. Regardless of who ends up in that tourney, the 2012-13 Miners will certainly have a tough task ahead of them. Check back for more scheduling updates in the coming months.

Conference Commissioners Discussing Potential BCS Selection Committee

+

The commissioners of the 11 FBS football conferences are currently discussing the different possibilities of a potential BCS format change. While many seem to like the idea of a four team playoff, most do not like the idea of keeping the current ratings system. Rather than take the top four ranked schools in the BCS poll, commissioners are discussing the possibility of creating a BCS Selection Committee similar to that of college basketball. Any changes to the current system would not go into effect until 2014. More on this to come.

Fight Cancellation Story Beginning to Take Shape

+

While the surprising announcement that the June 16th fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee at the Sun Bowl would be cancelled is now in the rearview mirror, the whole story is just beginning to take shape. Rumors are swirling that Chavez Jr. is currently dating the ex-wife of cartel leader El Chapo Guzman's son, and that potentially is the "perceived threat" that most are talking about. There is still no public knowledge of any actual threat, and the actions taken by the chancellor seem to be preemptive. Although the decision made may seem to be a "reasonable" one, without any direct threat, that decision is completely bogus. El Paso has been host to many events such as this one, always without incident. We remain one of the safest cities in the country, and its a shame that the UT Chancellor has put a black eye on the city, IF, there have not been any direct theats. El Paso mayor John Cook has estimated the economic loss for the city at $4.5 million, but the indirect negative impact on the economy could reach numbers far greater than that. More on this as the story unfolds.

A Break From Basketball: CMP Talks UTEP Football on SiriusXM Sports

Coach Price talks injuries, scheduling, and even hints that the Miners will end up in the Mountain West Conference when "it's all said and done". Have a listen.

"The only thing we can figure out is that so many people would be coming over the border to watch the fight. That's not a high security concern, that's just racist."-Top Rank's Bob Arum

More of Nothing: BCS Weighing Playoff Options

+

It seems like this story just keeps repeating itself over and over, but the powers of the BCS are looking into the possibility of a neutral site playoff. The specifics of such a playoff are still up in the air, but most seem to like the idea of 4 teams. Any changes wouldn't take effect until the 2014 season, so we'll likely hear this same jazz another 2 or 3 times before we get any definitive word. In any case, its nice to see the BCS (kinda) buying into what the public has wanted for years now. More on this as it becomes available.
