UTEP Basketball Recruiting Update: Miners in Running for Namon Wright

USA TODAY Sports

The UTEP men's basketball team is in the running for class of 2014 4-Star shooting guard Namon Wright, as well as a pair of talented point guards out of California and Louisiana.

The UTEP Twitter world has been a buzz the past 48 hours over the recent visit by Los Angeles guard Namon Wright (C/O 2014 #11 overall SG Rivals, #19 overall SG ESPN), a 6-5 shooting guard who is considered a 4-star recruit by the majority of recruiting outlets.

Wright, who was originally set to play his senior year at Findlay Prep (NV), opted to return to Pacific Hills in the Los Angeles area, the school he helped lead to the 2013 CIF state title. The star guard was in the Sun City this past weekend on an official visit, and said on his Twitter account the Miner Maniacs were chanting "we want Namon" at Saturday's football showdown vs UNM.

Namon Wright on his visit:

"Well it was wonderful, I loved the team, coach, facilities, fans, and everything else."

Floyd is at it again, using the strong California pipeline to show he hasn't lost a step in getting big time recruits' attention since the Isaac Hamilton drama. Floyd followed up the campus visit with a home visit last night, according to Wright's Twitter feed.

Floyd has also had the help of Miner Nation. Miner fans are making their presence known on Twitter, something that could pay off and bring huge excitement for the future after Hamilton broke Miner Nation's orange heart.

Wright is ranked the 7th overall player in the state of California by ESPN.com, and with his size and length he can play both the 2 or 3, the exact type of player Floyd salivates over.

With great size and long arms, and a smooth stroke from the perimeter, Wright would be an immediate star and could be Miner fans' new prized player, starring alongside the young core the Miners will debut this season.

While no announcement or hints of a commitment are being dropped, the Miners look to be one of the front runners for Wright's services next year, so far.

Wright isn't the only player Floyd and his staff have their eye on. The Miners also got a visit this past weekend from Atascadero CA, guard Robbie Berwick, a 6-4 guard who is being courted and offered by Stanford, Fresno State, Harvard, and UC Santa Barbara.

Floyd has also been busy in the south, going hard after New Orleans point guard Tyree Griffin. The ultra quick guard is ranked the no. 6 overall prospect in New Orleans by the NOLA.com/Times-Picayune Super 16 rankings.

Griffin took his official visit Aug 30th, and has Texas A&M, West Virginia and Middle Tennessee State showing interest. Griffin said Coach Floyd will pay him a home visit on Thursday, but did not give any specific comment as to exactly where the Miners stood in his recruiting process.
