12-13 Miners take the Green Wave to Overtime, Win

Michael Perez had 15 points, John Bohannon had 10 rebounds without registering a single point to his stat column in regular time, but in overtime Bohannon, the sophomore, stepped up huge in the final minutes and scored 5 points to propel the Miners to victory by the score of 54-52. What a win.

The Miners now take a week off before having to travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers in the FedEx Forum (12:00 PM MT)

coach johnson was talking on the post game show

that the first thing floyd said in the locker room was that it was about time one of these went our way. We didn’t play great, or shoot well, but sometimes you’re just gonna get the win…whether you deserve it or not. Tonight was one of those nights. And thank God, because it makes my Saturday night that much sweeter. Go Miners!!

One week.

To prepare for Memphis. Hopefully CTF gets the guys ready to go back on the road, I would LOVE to upset the Tigers at their place.

j wash is such a good defender

he is guarding ibrahim with his jersey and voice

by lebowski jr on Feb 11, 2012 9:29 PM MST reply actions

Haha

J Wash is going to be a staple of this team in the coming years. He has so much raw talent, and is one hell of a defender. Tarrant had 0 points before Washburn left with 4 fouls.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 9:34 PM MST up reply actions

exactly right

just sucked once he went out, tarrant scored 19. to be honest, i wish we had campbell on him there late instead of perez. perez just doesn’t have the feet to stay with a player like that. Although, perez made a HUGE play down the stretch when he denied tarrant the ball, and then another stripping it while the shot clock was winding down. Gotta give it up to him for staying aggressive and just hustling..

Off topic, but I have seen some posts on other boards. This seems to be the most likely make-up of the Merger if it goes thorugh.

Every indication right now is that it will.

West
Nevada
UNLV
Fresno State
Air Force
Colorado State
Wyoming
New Mexico
UTEP
Hawaii-FB only

East
Rice
Tulsa
La Tech
Tulane
Southern Miss
UAB
Marshall
East Carolina
Temple-FB only

This is the PERFECT scenario in my mind.

9 teams per division in Football with no crossovers. 16 teams in basketball.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 9:46 PM MST up reply actions

i like it

IMO a stronger football and bball conference. UTEP gets to renew old rivalries and on a selfish side, UTEP will play against UNLV (my grad school). Miners first – rebels second.

by lebowski jr on Feb 11, 2012 9:52 PM MST up reply actions

IDK about stronger, but I do like it

At this point I don’t think there’s any question that this merger is the best option.

i remember the wac rivalries of the 2000

every wednesday n saturday the Haskins center used to fill up against teams like nevada, la tech, fresno st. throw in games like vs unlv, unm, wyoming i can almost gurantee every conference home game will sell out. i expect this utep team to be contending for a championship starting next year.

BTW, the Conference officials are meeting tomorrow.

There is a good chance that an announcement of some sort is made soon.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 9:54 PM MST reply actions

We should definitely know soon

I would assume by tomorrow afternoon/night we should know what the intentions are, and within a few days after that things will probably be officially announced.

Quick question.

If the Merger ends up being Football only, should we move basketball and other sports to the MWC?

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 9:58 PM MST reply actions

I highly doubt that the merger would be football only

At this point the MWC will have only 8 football schools, and 7 in other sports. C-USA will have 8. It would take major expansion for both conferences to get to a number that would make sense. That expansion would undoubtedly water things down. The merger will ensure a handful of quality programs in both football and basketball, and would likely make for better TV money.

IF it were to be only football, I think yes we move. Geographically, it just makes more sense for us. We’re just too disconnected from the rest of the conference with the other two texas schools gone.

That is my thinkiing too.

I would rather see a full on merger. The only thing is, how willing would the East schools be to travel so far west and vice versa? Unless the sceduling was very minimal in crossovers, I can see that being a bid discussion point. Another option is to “Technically” go Football only but then have a Holiday tournament between all the schools in the Merger at a neutral site.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 10:11 PM MST up reply actions

Definitely wouldn't be too much cross scheduling

Obviously football you’d have 7 division games, and maybe 1 crossover or just 5 non-conference games. Basketball you’d have 14 division and 2 or maybe even 4 crossovers. With basketball and other sports, I don’t think travel is as much of an issue. In football you probably have 75+ people with players, coaches, trainers, and others. That’s a ton of money for travel, lodging, food, transportation, etc. With other sports there’s maybe 1/5 of that expense. So I think you’d be able to do some more traveling.

I think there are sensible solutions to any potential issues a merger might bring. And I’m sure that as we speak, there are people working on solving those issues in the best way possible. The merger should happen in all sports, and I’m excited to see what it can bring.

whats the percentage the merger is all sports?

because lets say we go separate in hoops…we still play CUSA teams right?

by DFWMiner on Feb 11, 2012 10:02 PM MST reply actions

Depends

If we choose to stay in CUSA or not. CUSA won’t be the same conference, I think the MWC with UNM, UNLV, Nevad, Wyoming, UTEP, etc. Would be stronger than CUSA with UTEP, USM, Marshall, UAB.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 10:05 PM MST up reply actions

what about Tulsa, Rice and Tulane? to be a fly on the wall of those meetings must be interesting....

ive said it from the moment all hell started breaking lose…if we dont get SMU, UH in fball and Memphis in bball, then stayin in CUSA is pointless for us…I realize we dont have any leverage or arent in any position to call the shots, but we need to put ourselves in a situation where we’re playin MWC teams in fball and bball…funny thing is the new MWC is basically a version of the old WAC sans BYU and UTAH

by DFWMiner on Feb 11, 2012 10:12 PM MST up reply actions

I'd say probably 75% its an all sports merger

It just makes sense. And like jake says, it all depends. I think considering how far UTEP is from the majority of schools left in C-USA and the majority of potential expansion candidates, our status could be different from that of the merger. If it happens to be football only, we may still have a decision to make about whether to try and join the MWC or stay in C-USA in other sports. So, who knows who well be playing.

I was thinking the exact same thing

But, thinking about that made me think even more that it would be an all sports merger. UTEP, Tulsa, and Rice going to the MWC would likely just end C-USA. Others would just make their way into other conferences, and C-USA would be no more. So, considering USM and ECU are pretty good in football, and Marshall is on the rise, why would we want them in another conference? They all bring something to the table, as do Tulane and UAB. Point is, why take half, and let the rest go? The merger in all sports is the best solution for everyone at this point.

bottom line, we have a chance to get into the MWC right now based on the numbers left in that league...

we need to try and do that. CUSA has become a league based along the sunbelt region, i dont think we belong there when push comes to shove

I agree

I have loved C-USA, but it just isn’t the same. Nearly all the teams we have developed rivalries with are gone. I feel like a move to the MWC would reinvigorate our Fanbase, and provide a much better opportunity for away game travel.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 10:27 PM MST up reply actions

That is a good point.

I hope it doesn’t happen though. I would rather see the MWC drop Hawaii and just add USU.

by jakeprobst on Feb 11, 2012 10:31 PM MST up reply actions

very good point

But I think, or maybe just hope, right now the MWC would like to have UTEP as much as we’d like to have them. I think its just a good fit. But, market wise, UTEP just doesn’t bring a great TV market wheres USU gets them into an entire state TV wise. Granted, Utah is the school in that state, but still.

Random thought, but i was watching highlights of syracuse's game on espn...

and I think the lettering they have along the side of the court looks great…it says “NEW YORK’S COLLEGE TEAM” i’d love for us to do something similar and make it say something like “TEXAS’ ONLY NATIONAL CHAMPION” it is such an obscure fact that I think few really know about it…I know we;re not on TV too often, but it would add to aura, appeal of the DHC IMO, thoughts?

by DFWMiner on Feb 11, 2012 10:51 PM MST reply actions

i like it

UTEP could use some serious PR assistance. CTF is making an effort by recognizing the rich past, but I don’t see much PR for these. Tonight for example, was great seeing the sweet 16 team back in the DHC. Could have used some press.

I think the only TX national champ is a great way to promote UTEP athletics. Not to mention UTEP is #10 in the country for Mens sports DI Championships. All Miners and El Pasoans should be aware and proud of this. It’s a great promo tool.

by lebowski jr on Feb 11, 2012 10:59 PM MST up reply actions

Very good idea

I wouldn’t even know how to go about getting something like that done. But like you guys are saying, more should be done to market ourselves.

by asalom on Feb 11, 2012 11:05 PM MST up reply actions

Yep.

But it’s UTEP, so I doubt we have the right people in place to market ourselves nationally.

You're right and its a matter of funding

In order to do certain things, you need money. And, with attendances where they’re at, especially in football, I don’t imagine we bring in a ton of revenue.

Im curious how much that would cost, couldnt be too much right, a couple thousand at most

these are the times i wish i was banking and able to just donate some money to the ath dept to get that done….btw watching macgruber on hbo and did anyone know he was the starting TE for UTEP? haha
