"Miner Memories": Kevin Beal Decks Sly Johnson. During a 1996 WAC game between the Miners and Wyoming, Sharif Fajardo gets fouled hard by the Cowboys' Sly Johnson while going up for a dunk. Jeff Spillar decides to get in Johnson's face for the cheap foul, but Sly is having none of it. He throws a punch that barely makes contact, and winds up paying for it as Kevin Beal comes in and makes him a mop on the Special Events Center floor. While I don't condone fighting, especially in sporting events, in any way, this here is one of my favorite Miner memories. Just goes to show, you don't mess with the Miners

First of all, I remember watching this UTEP-Wyoming game on TV w my dad, It was a late game on ESPN2, and it was so chippy and physical throughout u knew something was about happen…it didnt help that UTEP fans always grilled WYO’s coach and players worst than some other teams for some reason…it also led to one of the best UTEP nicknames of all time…Kevin “the real deal” Beal! That team struggled all year, the Bear suffered a heart attack during halftime of the home game versus UNM and I dont think came back on the bench that season, yet this clip shows the fight we played with all year…good stuff.
Back to the clip I posted, its another fight, this time against Nevada…Funny thing is we have to have the most amount of fight clips on YouTube than any other team, how u take that is up to you, but I think it’s pretty epic.
And just think about this…of the 3 clips posted on here today, we are on the verge of possibly playing all these teams again in a conference. Im starting to look forward to playin these teams again…who knows how the merger will all shake out, but give me UNM. Nevada and Wyoming any day of the week over UAB, USM and Marshall.
eeeh
I get your point, but I think I’d rather have them all in one league so we can play our old rivals on a regular basis, while still being able to “crossover” to play some games against those C-USA teams…I realize its not what it was in the days of the old WAC against schools like BYU and Utah, but we’ve had some great games against those C-USA schools. Especially UAB.
