UTEP @ Rice Open Gamethread

UTEP Miners at Rice Owls, Feb 1, 2012 6:00 PM MST

The UTEP Miners (10-11, 3-4) will take on the Rice Owls (12-10, 3-4) tonight at 6 p.m. MT at Tudor Fieldhouse in Houston, TX. The game will be the Miners second in Houston over the last 5 days. UTEP leads the overall series with Rice 14-9, and have taken 10 of the last 12 meetings.

The two teams last met on February 5, 2011 at Tudor Fieldhouse, and Julyan Stone had a career night with 23 points leading the Miners to a 59-53 victory. While the Miners lead the overall series, Rice leads in games played in Houston, taking 6 of 10. The Miners however are 2-0 at Tudor Fieldhouse (formerly Autry Court). Also UTEP coach Tim Floyd carries a 6-3 all time mark against Rice coach Ben Braun.

Star-divide

The Owls come into the contest at 12-10 overall (9-10 vs. D1 opp.), and 3-4 in Conference USA action. They are fresh off an 88-74 home win over Tulane on the 28th, but they had dropped their 3 previous matches. In their last 10 games, the Owls are 4-6 with their wins coming over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, SMU, and Tulane twice.

Junior F Arsalan Kazemi leads the way for the Owls, averaging 13.1 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest. Junior G Tamir Jackson is also a force for Rice, putting up 11.4 points per game, and senior G Connor Frizzelle is having a decent year as well, going for 9.7 points and 1.7 assists per game.

The Miners come into the game at 10-11 overall, and 3-4 in Conference USA play. They are fresh off a heartbreaking overtime loss at the hands of the Houston Cougars on the 28th. In that game, the Miners held the lead nearly the entire way, and by 15 at one point, before allowing Houston to make their way back, force overtime, and steal the win.

UTEP is led by sophomore G Michael Perez who is averaging 12.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Senior F Gabriel McCulley, the Miners' glue guy, is currently averaging 11.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals a game. Freshman G/F Julian Washburn is also having a fine year, averaging 10.8 points and 3.2 rebounds a game.

Sophomore C John Bohannon didn't have a great start to the year, but is coming on very strong as of late, averaging 10.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.9 assists on the season, including a 17 and 10 average over the last four contests. Also of note, freshman F Cedrick Lang, who has played well all year, is currently suffering from a stress fracture in his foot. He is playing, but one would have to think the injury takes a toll in some way or another. Lang is averaging 7.3 points, and 4.8 rebounds a game.

The Miners are in for a tough test tonight, perhaps the toughest of their three game road swing. Arsalan Kazemi is solid player in this league, and our team has had issues defending athletic big men. Guys like Gabe McCulley and Cedrick Lang will need to stay out of foul trouble, and others like Perez and Washburn will need to work to get open and make some plays for us.

It should be a close game, and one the Miners can definitely win. But, there have been plenty of those this season, and so far on the road the Miners have yet to win even one. Will tonight be the night? We'll have to wait and see. Go Miners!!

otherwise gotta know your dark back alleys, so to speak

haha "dark alleys" I love it

So I know SB Nation doesn’t even wanting us mentioning these sites on here, but I just thought it was crazy that Kappy was on Sports Talk right now announcing to El Paso that they could watch the game at firstrowsports.com. I’m not sure if he just doesn’t realize its illegal, or just doesn’t care, but you would think the radio host on an ESPN Radio show would be a little more concerned about potential liabilities. Anyway, just thought it was funny.

You guys should just buy the all access from UTEP

$10/a month. Use it for a month, and then cancel. You’ll get to watch a few games for 10 bucks. Not bad

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 6:11 PM MST reply actions

They don't show all the games though

You never know if your able to watch the game or if your stuck with hearing just the audio. Plus, it’s a hassle to cancel your subscription.

True,

any games that will be televised by ESPN, CBS, FOX or any other network will not be carried due to rights issues (which makes no sense to me considering UTEP should still maintain some rights), but all games that they “own the rights to” will be shown. I can’t say anything about the cancellation policy. I’ve only had mine a few months, and haven’t tried to cancel. I just went ahead and got it, because I kept getting viruses from first row.

After decommitting from UTEP last week, 2012 SF Anthony January (Taft, CA) has received interest from Seton Hall per @3starmeyer #shbb

Doesn't surprise me

He might even get some bigger schools interested if he keeps playing the way he has been. He had like 38 the other night, and his team is tops in la.

Probably

But we have just lost all momentum on both ends of the court. 17 to 4 Rice run right now, with a free throw to come. We need to get SOMETHING going over the next 3:42.

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 6:36 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly what we needed

8-0 Miner run, back to 2 point game.

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 6:40 PM MST reply actions

Yeah there was

They could’ve easily called a foul, but oh well. I’ll take the way that half went over the last 3:42/

McCulley with 17 points and 6 boards

at the half. Huge play from him. You gotta love the fight that this team plays with. Goes down ten on the road, and comes right back to take the lead and make it a game at the half.

C-USA Scores

Marhshall all over Tulane 63-42 with 1 to play, ECU dropped SMU 62-43, USM and Memphis going at it 30-24 Tigers, UAB-Houston about to tip, and obviously Rice up on UTEP 41-40 at the half.

you should be able to download

an app on your phone that will give you access to fm radio across the country. You can listen to 92.3 the fox and hear the game called by “the voice of the miners”. ha. I think one of the aps is called tune in radio

Nice defensive stop

Bohannon needs to be smart!!

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 7:31 PM MST reply actions

What a swing here

We really need a stop now. Can’t afford to be down 7 or 8 with 3 minutes to play

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 7:34 PM MST reply actions

UTEP Scoring

McCulley 21, Bohannon and Washburn 16, and Perez 14. You’d think with that production we’d be able to get it done

Streeter with another critical turnover

That’s should have stopped a long time ago.

by davidbb on Feb 1, 2012 7:47 PM MST reply actions

How obvious was that???

YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT PLAY IS COMING!!! And I can’t believe bo just pushes him. Try to block him if you’re going to foul!! Make sure he doesn’t make it

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 7:54 PM MST reply actions

I said the same thing

Telegraphed plain to see. Miners need better defense.

by davidbb on Feb 1, 2012 7:55 PM MST up reply actions

Can't ask for better defense

The guy just knocked it down. What else can you say?

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 7:57 PM MST reply actions

I realize with .2 its virtually impossible to make a full court shot

but rolling it???? Might as well just inbound the ball and not do shit

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 8:00 PM MST reply actions

McCulley didn't know what to do

He held his hands up in the air before throw in

by davidbb on Feb 1, 2012 8:03 PM MST up reply actions

Monkey on our back

Miners gonna have a tough time getting this one off their back. Ouch!

by davidbb on Feb 1, 2012 8:01 PM MST reply actions

Oh well guys

Another pretty good performance by these guys, but we just haven’t figured out how to win on the road. It is what it is. Time to watch the end of USM Memphis

by asalom on Feb 1, 2012 8:01 PM MST reply actions

I know

It seemed like that had knocked off #1 in the nation, or won the NCAA tourney or something. Maybe our team and fans will react that when we finally win a road game! ha
