UTEP Edges FCS Stony Brook 31-24 in OT Post-Game Celebration Thread

It wasn't pretty.  In fact, it was downright ugly.  The UTEP Miners edged the FCS Stony Brook Seawolves 31-24 Saturday night in the Sun Bowl.  The Miners trailed 24-10 with just over 3:00 minutes to play in the third quarter.  Luckily, the Miners offense finally found some rhythm and UTEP's defense did just enough to hold off the Seawolves.

Postgame analysis is coming.  For now, here's your post-game discussion thread.

First...

Kudos to Stony Brook, they put together a heck of a game, are very disciplined, & wouldn’t be surprised if they make it to the championship of the FCS.

Next…time for some clean up. I do like the fight I see in Laimason; he’s a player! Granted I don’t like the turnovers but at least he can throw a screen pass. There’s a lot of work left to be done, but believe this will be a confidence builder for the squad going into the remainder of the season & has illustrated to the squad that Lamison is now the leader of the team.

Also...

Hard not to mention the performance of Eric Tomlinson, Edwards & Perry. Great Work! Defense shored it up in the last ~6 Seawolve possessions, however they’re gonna have to clamp down much earlier than they did this evening. Mulligans all around given it’s the first game of the season.

Tomlinson was Huge- just huge

Edwards showed signs. The turnovers were killers. Man- it was sloppy, it was frustrating, and like so many UTEP games it ended up being downright exciting.

There is a LOT of room for improvement but at least UTEP avoided the embarrassment of an FCS loss. A loss to Stony Brook would have destroyed fan support and attendance would be atrocious. The Miners need every win, but they really couldn’t afford this loss.

Lamaison showed some a lot down the stretch. But, there is a lot of work to do. Oh, and thank God for Travaun Nixon! We’ll do awards on Monday, but hard to argue with him for M-V-P.

M.V.P

Nixon was a warrior on defense all night, but 365 yards passing and 3 TDs including the game winner in overtime under a heavy rush. M.V.P. clearly goes to Nick Lamaison

I know its easy to get down after a game like this,

but we have to realize that this is certainly a rebuilding year. This was the first time this offense really had a chance to play together. The defense allowed 17 points which we didn’t want to see, but they really clamped down when it mattered, and more than that, they are much better than they showed on Saturday.

So the d will be fine, and the o should come around, but we can’t expect to win 10 games. I still see 6 as a good possibility, and if we can really get going we might get 7. Stay up, keep supporting the Miners.

Everyone make sure to check out my new sports blog called The Sports Loop at www.inthesportsloop.com. Hopefully it give you all something to talk about until Miner athletics get back into full swing. Let me know what you think.
