UTEP's Tim Floyd in the Hunt for Rivals 4 Star SF Winston Shepard
First, the UTEP Miners basketball team received a commitment from 6'5 swingman Twymond Howard. Howard, a Rivals 4 star recruit, chose the Miners over offers from the Baylor Bears, Tennessee Volunteers, Georgetown Hoyas, and Arkansas Razorbacks among others. Now, another four star forward, Winston Shepard, is considering UTEP. According to Rivals.com's Eric Bossi, Shepard has UTEP in his top six along with Oklahoma State, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV, and Georgia. Now, Shepard himself is reaching out to the Miner Nation by seeking UTEP fans to follow him on Twitter. Here are the highlights of the 6'8 forward from Findlay Prep.
Shepard's Rivals page lists offers from the schools mentioned above as well as the Texas Longhorns, Missouri Tigers, and Memphis Tigers. Tim Floyd has already snagged a whale in Twymond Howard, but now we'll get to see if he can take that recruiting momentum and build a class that could be among the best in the nation. Snagging a commit from Shepard would launch UTEP's recruiting class into a truly elite class.

Between some of the guys UTEP is bringing in
and the ridiculous classes Houston has for 2011 and 2012, and the talent Memphis always has, and the consistently respectable programs put forward by schools like UAB, I think C-USA is on the fast track to becoming THE mid-major conference in all the land.

Completely agreed
Tim Floyd is barely getting started here, Houston is bringing in some great talents, Memphis is always bringing in talent, and programs like UAB, Southern Miss, Tulsa, and UCF are on the right track as well. But, we still need to perform. Last year I really felt like we deserved at least two bids to the NCAA tournament, then UAB goes out and lays an egg. Its one thing to bring in the talent, and it something completely different to actually perform. We’re half way there.
Everyone make sure to check out my new sports blog called The Sports Loop at www.inthesportsloop.com. Hopefully it give you all something to talk about until Miner athletics get back into full swing. Let me know what you think.
It really is
And with BYU out of the MWC that league took a major hit. Im curious to see if UCF can get their act together this year- recall that insane start they had last season.
But, its so nice to see C-USA schools not named Memphis grabbing 4 star recruits.

Totally agree
C-USA seems to be really stepping up across the board. I don’t really follow C-USA basketball much during the offseason, particularly teams that aren’t Marshall but I’m learning more over time.
UCF seems to have all the pieces there to do well. Being biased against their coach, I just don’t see him being able to get a team to perform at key points (whether it be OOC games, conference games or post-season; last season it was clearly the latter two).
Marshall is drawing some pretty solid pre-season attention with several articles stating we’ve got potential for a top 25 ranking at some point if we can pull out key OOC wins during the season (Cincinnati, Syracuse, wvu, Belmont, etc).
Recruiting class
The recruiting class of 2012 can be well lets just say LEGIT! Just with Twymond Howard and Anthony January (who will be a top 100 player by the time he gets here). If we can possibly get Winston..WOW! Top 70 player in the nation. and don’t forget Chris Washburn, Julian Washburns brother. Very good chance we land him too. Floyd will probably weed out a couple players or might decide to transfer with lack of playing time. At the end of the day Floyd has us going in the right direction and going to be a team making noise on the national level again.
Absolutely-
No denying he’s getting high profile guys we haven’t seen in a while- the amazing thing is he’s getting them out of high school. Yes, we had a Derrick Caracter here- but it took him crashing out at Louisville first. Floyd is truly battling the giants and starting to win some of those contests.
