BEAT SMU: UTEP Miners at SMU Open Thread

The UTEP Miners (1-0, 0-0 C-USA) at the SMU Mustangs (0-1, 0-0 C-USA)

Saturday, September 10, 2011 (5:00 pm MST)

GERALD J. FORD STADIUM

SMU Leads Series Record 10-8, but UTEP has won 6 of the last 8 Meetings

TV:  Fox Sports Southwest

Here are some quick gameday links I wanted to pass on.

The Preview:  USA Today has a comprehensive game preview available here.

The Switch:  ESPN takes one last look at the SMU quarterback switch from Kyle Padron to J.J. McDermott.

Getting Comfy:  Bret Bloomquist has some nice quotes from Nick Lamaison on getting the first game under his belt.

Star-divide

It's gameday in Dallas.  I'll be attending tonight's game so I'm extra excited for this one.  Any Rusher's in the DFW area leave a comment and maybe we can meet up before the game or after to drink a celebratory beer.

In my mind, this game will come down to whether or not UTEP can get anything going on the ground.  Joe Banyard and Vernon Frazier didn't have much to work with last week.  Here's hoping, the return of Jerel Watkins and some other UTEP offensive linemen, and the experience of getting a game under their belt, will help the line begin to gel and develop chemistry.

Go Miners!

Im at the game----

Large Miner contingent several thousand loud fans…. This team is really struggling with run defense and the offensive line just doesnt have it togeother yet.

I put some money down on UTEP plus 20—— I still like that bet. I do think UTEP can keep it close.

I agree, we look strides better than last week, and we've been able to force some turnovers. 5-6 wins is very possible

Honestly guys

What a showing by our Miners. They really put up a fight out there and were still in this game down to the wire with a redshirt freshman qb taking his first snaps. That o-line really needs to improve though. They did well in the 3rd quarter and into the 4th, but the first half and late in the game our qbs had no time to throw. That’s why lamaison got hurt in the first place. Still, very good showing, wish we could’ve won, but I didn’t expect to win this one anyway. Just glad to see we’re coming along.

I agree, I was expecting us to be out of this one early. But we were actually in position to take the lead late in the 4th. Javia Hall looked confident but he did make a few mistakes, partly due to the offensive line not giving him time.

I hope Nick is back next week, because NMSU beat Minnesota today, and for a team like NMSU, that is a pretty decent win. I think it will be a good one.

Definitely,

I think its possible that Nick is back next week, but seeing him in a sling wasn’t too comforting. I think the most he’ll miss is one week though.

I really like what I saw out of our QBs. They didn’t have very good protection the majority of the game, and they still managed to make some things happen. Other than Lamaison’s first two throws he really didn’t force anything, and showed some great touch and accuracy. Hall showed some good things too, I would just like to see him tuck the ball and run a little. It seemed like he had some opportunities to run, but chose to sit back and throw.

We really need that line to come around though. We can’t survive week in and week out with a marginal running game, and our qbs constantly running for their lives.
