Only ten more days till the Miners take on Stony Brook in the Sun Bowl. I can't wait, but I guess we're going to have to. While we do, here is what's going on around the Miner Nation. Here's mini dig no. 7.
UTEP Volleyball Adds Two Local Products -
The UTEP women's volleyball team has added two members to their team from around the El Paso/Juarez area. Francquee Acosta is a 2010 graduate of Americas High School who had 330 kills, 166 digs, 66 blocks, and 43 aces as a senior. She was also named to the first team all-district (1-5A) team, as well as given an honorable mention for the all-state team. Xitlati Herrera is a Juarez, MX native who has much experiencerepresenting Mexico at the FIVB, NORCECA, and Federacion Internationale de Volleyball World Tour. Both players bring much to the table for this team, and we wish them much success in their Miner careers and beyond.
UTEP Finalizes its Men's Basketball Conference USA Schedule -
The UTEP Men's basketball team found out this week exactly who, when, and where they would be playing in conference in the upcoming season. Some key dates include opening up the conference slate at Marshall on January 4th, traveling to Tulsa January 11th, taking on UAB in the Don on February 4th, and then a three game in seven days stretch at Memphis (Feb. 18th), against Southern Miss (Feb. 22), and at UCF (Feb 25th). This young Miner squad certainly has their work cut out for them, especially on the road. This year they will travel to Oregon, UNLV, NMSU, Memphis, Marshall, and UCF. Gotta put it together quick guys. Good Luck.
Former Miner Receiver Excelling in Chicago -
Former UTEP Miner wideout Kris Adams is certainly making a name for himself this preseason with the Chicago Bears. Adams had 3 receptions for 58 yards to lead all receivers in a game against Buffalo, and had 1 reception for 12 yards in the Bears 2nd game against New York. Adams is fighting for a spot on that roster with a ton of other receivers, but the guy definitely has the talent to make it in the NFL. I've got a feeling even if things don't work out in Chicago, he'll still find himself on a roster somewhere else. Keep up the good work Kris.
Former Miner Rod Huntley Released From Minnesota Vikings -
Former UTEP Miner offensive lineman Rod Huntley was released yesterday by the Minnesota Vikings. Its just the nature of the beast. As the preseason gets deeper, and the regular season nears, many players are cut in order to make room for others, or to get down the allowed roster size. Huntley was just the latest victim in the process as the Vikings added two FA players to their roster. Good luck to Rod, hope he gets picked up real soon.
