The RC3 Show: UTEP Beats Tulsa 66-54 Post Game Celebration Thread

The UTEP Miners knocked off the Tulsa Golden Hurricane 66-54 to advance to their second consecutive Conference USA Tournament Championship Game.  The Miners were led by Randy Culpepper who absolutely took the game over offensively.  Culpepper finished with a game high 26 points.  Jeremy Williams had a huge game as well and finished with 10 rebounds and 4 blocks.  Christian Polk also had a nice game and finished with 13 points.  Tulsa was led by Justin Hurtt's 17 points.

The Miners will play the winner of the Memphis vs. ECU game that should start in about 30 minutes.  Who do you want to play?  Do you want a chance to avenge the foul and ejection marred loss to ECU from a few weeks ago?  Or do you want the Miners to take on the team we all love to watch lose:  Memphis?   More analysis later, for now here is your post game celebration thread.

Woo! Rather play ECU

They should be more tired since it’s their 4th game and they rely on the 3 a lot, which will be tougher with tired legs

Yeah me too, but without Brock Young ECU is going to have a tough time.

Yeah, the system used only missed one bid last year. It is a good predictor, and gets rid of BIAS

I don't know if they would take an-auto bid team. Also, it show that our at-large rank is 45. Memphis and UAB are closer to 50. UAB would be the second to last team in.

It is kind of cool to go through the whole season, through each up and down, and know that we are ONE win away from consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. I am loving it!

I was looking at the numbers for our recruits coming in and Dazmond Starke, a PF that is coming in from Eastern Arizona. averages 9 boards a game. Also Cedric Lang is supposed to be an excellent rebounder. Good news!

nice work jake

i expect a rebuilding year, but i trust CTF knows what he is doing and your #’s show just that. we will going from the most experienced team to one of the youngest. there are lots of shoes to fill from our departing seniors.

Julian Washburn

should contribute some boards as well. Not sure what happened to him is senior year but he was highly rated for the class of 2010. Lot’s of big time programs showed interest in him and he was the 29th PF for that year according to espn.

On a similar note: Jalen Ragland has moved up on his scouts grade and CJ Cooper has moved down. Can’t weigh the numbers too heavy cause its all about the coaching and work ethic once you get them on campus.

I know its optimistic but I dont see us having a ‘rebuilding’ year. Of course it would be unrealistic to expect the results we are currently having but I still see us in the upper side of the pack. McCulley has been getting some starts here down the stretch and has been getting serious playing time. The start of this year we weren’t sure how the experienced players would adapt to a new system so why can’t new players fit into the new program? I’ve got faith in our coaching staff – heck, we have two division 1 head coaches…hehe

We definitely have some talent coming in. I think we could have a few sleepers.

I am with you, I expect a good season. I would say we at least reach 18 wins. Remember that Jaques Streeter has been “on” the team all season, and Julian Wasburn has been on campus as well. They have a head start on the new guys, and both Mike Perez and John Bohannon will be a solid foundation to the team as well.

I would think the starting line-up would look like this:

C John Bohannon
PF Julian Washburn
SF Gabe McCulley
SG Mike Perez
PG Jaques Streeter

I would also expect Floyd to go to the Bench a lot. If McCulley gets into foul trouble, we have a VERY capable player behind him in Darius Nelson. We have a few good PGs to draw from, a good number of PFs, and Cedric Lang is there behind Bohannon. The only position that we lack depth at is SG, but Ragland has tremendous upside.

M-V-P

Man, can’t help but think that Aaron Johnson is in the bleachers, or back in Alabama, and Randy Culpepper had a true showcase of a game tonight. If C-USA voted for MVP after the tournament, I have no doubt RC3 would be the winner. What a game he had tonight.

by Adrian Mac on Mar 12, 2011 12:29 AM MST reply actions

What a game he had, indeed

It just sucks, as the season winds down, and reality sets in, you realize this special player will soon hang up the Orange and Blue for good. And, of course, not only him, but 7 other great seniors. They’re gonna be missed.

Of course, this is still overshadowed by the excitement of tomorrow’s game. What else could you ask for? UTEP-Memphis in the championship game of the conference tourney…in El Paso. I can’t wait.

by asalom on Mar 12, 2011 12:39 AM MST up reply actions

ONE game from the tourney, can we do it? I think YES!

I think these guys play with A LOT of intensity when they play Memphis. We have played very well against them since Randy and Gabe first came here, and the addition of Jeremy Williams added to that. I think these guys are going to come out ON FIRE! This is a chance to show that the days of Memphis owning this conference are over for good. I think Randy goes for 30+ and we get SOLID contributions out of our other Memphians. GONNA BE FUN!
