Conference USA Power Rankings

Its tough to tell who belongs where in Conference USA. Six teams are within a game of first place, and teams like Tulsa, SMU, and ECU have put themselves into the conversation. Southern Miss is probably the hottest team in the league right now, but are they deserving of the top spot? Here are this week's Conference USA power rankings, this time from last to first.

12.) Tulane Green Wave (12-10, 2-7) RPI: 219

The Green Wave are hands down the worst team in the league. Their early season success was merely a product of their weak scheduling, and their seven game losing streak proves that. The Wave are on the road this week so we may see that losing streak get to 9. They are talented, and are no pushover, but they are still a year away from being anything to worry about in conference.

11.) UCF Knights (14-7, 1-7) RPI: 83

Its crazy to think that a team ranked in the top 100 RPI is actually one of  the worst teams in Conference USA, but where else do you put a team that has lost seven in a row? The Knights have Memphis and Tulsa this week, and even though they may get one in the win column their season is almost completely done. This team probably isn't even an NIT team anymore.

Star-divide

10.) Houston Cougars (11-11, 3-6) RPI: 204

The Cougars can't seem to buy a win right now. They've played tough, but have now lost 5 in a row. Two of those games went to overtime, and they lost the other three by a total of 10 points. If you've got these guys on your schedule you better be prepared. They'll definitely give some teams some scares, but in this rebuilding year they won't be making any real noise.

9.) Rice Owls (11-12, 3-6) RPI: 164

The Owls have played tough as of late behind the play of Arselan Kazemi. They have won three of five, but face some tough opponents in the coming weeks. They might not be winning any games this week, but they'll certainly be competitive.

8.) Marshall Thundering Herd (15-8, 3-5) RPI: 68

Its always a coin flip with the Herd as you never know which team is going to show up. They've got UAB at home on Wednesday, but then have a handful of winnable games after that. Look for the Herd to start making a push up this list. They probably won't make it to the top, but they're capable of knocking off anyone in conference.

7.) East Carolina Pirates (13-10, 5-4) RPI: 118

The Pirates have played tough all season, and have gotten their conference record above .500. However, the next four games bring Marshall, at Tulsa, at USM, and UTEP. No matter what happens, they'll still be a middle of the pack team, but they could be bracing for a losing streak.

6.) Southern Methodist Mustangs (14-8, 5-3) RPI: 206

The Mustangs are tied with USM for the longest current win streak in C-USA at four games. Those wins include games against USM, and at Tulsa. They've got a game at UTEP Saturday, but that's the only real tough game of their next four. They've got a chance to keep themselves relevant in the C-USA title talks.

5.) Tulsa Golden Hurricane (13-10, 6-3) RPI: 92

The Golden Hurricane have broken into the RPI top 100, own wins against UTEP, Memphis, and UAB, and are sitting a half game out of first place. Truth is that they might deserve to be a little higher up this list, but they are still 13-10. With a couple winnable games on the horizon they've really got a chance to stay in the conference race.

4.) Memphis Tigers (17-6, 5-3) RPI: 48

The Tigers looked to have things back on track after winning four straight over Marshall, Southern Miss, UAB, and UCF. They followed that up with two losses at Marshall, and against Tulsa, but responded with a huge win over Gonzaga. The Tigers are still very much one of the favorites to take the C-USA title, but they've got a handful of tough games down the stretch.

3.) UAB Blazers (16-6, 6-3) RPI: 39

The Blazers lost one they couldn't really afford to give away at home against Southern Miss. They followed that up with a win at Tulane, and now have games at Marshall, and against Rice this week. A loss this week would really hamper their chances of winning the conference.

2.) Southern Miss Golden Eagles (18-5, 7-3) RPI: 47

After about a half season of inconsistent play, the Golden Eagles have finally found their rhythm winning four straight conference games to put them into a virtual tie for first with UTEP. They have also broken into the top 50 RPI, and are making a case for a bid to the NCAA tournament. The next two games bring Memphis and UTEP so we'll see just how serious they are about winning Conference USA.

1.) UTEP Miners (18-5, 6-2) RPI: 65

The Miners find themselves back in the top spot in Conference USA after a week absence. They had their game against UCF postponed, and knocked off Rice in Houston after a very odd travel schedule. They've got Wednesday off, and then take on SMU at home Saturday. I wouldn't count on them losing.

Truth is that I had a little trouble putting UTEP ahead of Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are looking scary right now, and could very well be the best team in C-USA. However, the Miners only have two conference losses, both on the road, on last second shots, and one in triple overtime. For now, you can kind of consider the two teams 1a and 1b instead of 1 and 2, and we'll just go ahead and settle that matter next week when the Miners head to Hattiesburg. Memphis and UAB also need to keep winning in order to keep pace, because at this point two games back may be a little too much to overcome. We've passed the half way point in conference, we'll soon know who the real contenders is C-USA are, while the rest will be weeded out.

The only change I would make and u mentioned it would...

be moving Tulsa up to 3rd. They just beat us and then Memphis on the road. I understand the 10 losses are glaring, but they do have the toughest SOS in the conference.

I would say we stay at first only because we seem to be the most consistent of the bunch, but our schedule gets much more interesting during the second half of CUSA play. 2 against SMU, which I never envisioned to be difficult, but they are obviously much better. Roadies at USM, ECU and big time home games Memphis and Marshall..yikes. Not too mention the make-up game against UCF which probably means we play 3 games in the span of a week.

Honestly whoever wins the reg season title deserves an at-large bid because getting through this thing with less than 3 losses will be an achievement. That probably wont happen so lets just be grateful the CUSA tourney is in out backyard.

Well said...

I think I’d still keep Tulsa and the rest of the rankings where they are listed but you make some sound points. That just goes to show how much parity we have in this conference and how difficult it would be for anybody to navigate all the landmines contained therein.
Interestingly enough, listening to Sports radio in Austin the other day, one of their BB specialists made a comment to that fact and also voiced the differences between leagues like ours and the current Big 12 as being a disappointment due to the fact that there are really only 2 top tier teams in their conference this year and it may come back to the bite them come selection Sunday. This just tells me that there is still a lot of ball left to be played and I believe our conference may end up getting the credit it deserves once all is said and done.

Regardless of who is ranked where in our conference

We deserve multiple bids. Even if its just 1 at large. There is just no way that a conference that has 7 top 100 teams, and 3 top 50 teams, and really not a single BAD team deserves only their automatic bid. That’d be complete robbery. Honestly if the Big East is going to get 11 teams, that wipes out at least 2 or 3 at larges from bubble teams. Stuff like that will definitely reduce C-USA to a 1 bid league.

I don't get it either

I mean I’m not complaining that George Mason and ODU are in the tourney, GM has an RPI of 25 and SOS of 71, and is 7-4 vs top 100 RPI, while ODU has an RPI of 31 with and SOS of 53, and is 7-5 vs. the top 100 RPI…I’m not saying they shouldn’t have two bids, but our conference is much stronger from top to bottom, and should surely deserve two bids also.

by asalom on Feb 8, 2011 12:51 PM MST up reply actions

Exactly. Both GMU and ODU have been impressive, but that league is not exactly strong across the board.

It just bugs me when a conference that is lower than CUSA in both RPI and SOS is getting more respect. CUSA has really improved across the board. Three years ago this league only had two teams in the RPI 100 at the end of the season. We have SEVEN right now. I agree that we need to improve our OOC schedule, but you also have to recognize the conference. I have seen many “Experts” state that as long as you go above .500 in the Big East, you are in. I have seen analysts claim that any team that has 10 wins in the ACC should be in. I realize that CUSA has had a lot of parody in conference play, but the same can be said about the Big East, the SEC, the Big 12, and even the Big 10. Why is it that even when we are almost even with the “Big 6” in RPI, that we still can’t get any respect? I truly think that you could throw the top half of C-USA into the Big East, and that you would see those teams compete for the Big East title right away. It just blows my mind how much Bias come from the Media and especially from ESPN.

Ill say it again, I dont think Conf affliation comes into play when it comes to mid-majors...

its great we have 7 teams in the top 100 RPI, but no one has separated themselves. That’s why I thought it was a bummer UCF bottomed out the way they did. They have an impressive OOC at large resume, and were projected early on as a 8-10 seed. What the heck happened there?

by DFWMiner on Feb 8, 2011 1:08 PM MST up reply actions

I wouldn't go that far

I’m a complete Big East hater, and I think they are way overrated, but I don’t think our better teams teams would compete for a title. We’d do ok, but playing top 25 teams every night will wear you down…regardless of that, we are deserving of at least two bids, and will probably get it. Its just a shame the national media gives us no credit.

by asalom on Feb 8, 2011 2:04 PM MST up reply actions

Bottom line for mid-majors is PARITY is NOT a good thing...

this is a prime example of it…we all know this conference is solid this year top to bottom, but in terms of multiple bids its not a good thing…JP, u mentioned the CAA, they have 2-3 teams dominating the league right now…the MWC has 3 teams that are clearly above the rest…and up until this season…the WCC had 2 teams dominate. Remember the NCAA committee will ultimately look at individual teams when it comes down to getting bids…and that’s even more magnified when ur a mid-major, conference affiliation or RPI doesnt mean anything when it comes to mid-majors.

If anything, im more offended by the fact that UTEP in Lunardi’s bracketology is a 13 seed. The champion of this league deserves no less that a 10 seed.

IMO, unless UTEP, Memphis, UAB or USM run the table, this league will not get a team in other than the tourney champ. Its a shame, but its the truth, these afformentioned teams need to separate themselves from the pack. Easier said than done especially this season.

by DFWMiner on Feb 8, 2011 1:03 PM MST up reply actions

I agree that it is looked that way. What makes me mad is that it shouldn't be looked at that way. If we have a single team running the table every year it just solidifies the ideology that this is a one bid league.

We need to change that perception, and we have slowly been on the right track. It is not fair to this conference when only one team makes the tourney, when any one is capable of winning on any given day. The only way I see this league consistently getting more than one bid is for us to load up our OOC with powerhouses. We shouldn’t have to do this but the Media’s proverbial “Glasses” are so thick that the only way to get their attention is to do so. It seems like Mid-Major teams must “exaggerate” in everything we do. (Go undefeated in Conference, play the toughest OOC schedule in the country, win our Conference tournament). And then after all that we are still supposed to be satisfied with a 10 seed. STUPID

WE NEED TO SCHEDULE TOUGHER OPPONENTS IN NON-CONFERENCE

No one cares about our win over Texas Tech, but it would’ve been huge if it was Missouri or K-State, no one cares about the conference’s wins over South Florida, but if it would’ve been Cincinnati or Marquette it’d be huge. We can go on and on, and Tulsa losing to ASU doesn’t help, UTEP losing to Georgia Tech doesn’t help, Memphis getting slammed by Georgetown and Tennessee doesn’t help…on and on and on. We need to schedule tougher, and we need to win games. Period. We can’t afford to lose to low BCS schools. Not to mention we need to schedule good mid-majors in order to really gauge ourselves….Look at BYU, this year they played Utah St, South Florida, St Mary’s, UTEP, Creighton, Arizona, and UCLA. They’ve got a great mix of BCS schools and good mid-majors, there’s no questioning where they stand. Memphis has got it right, now the rest of the conference has to follow suit. If not, we’ll be in this same boat e3
very year.

by asalom on Feb 8, 2011 2:14 PM MST up reply actions

Ur right, extremely frustrating, but I have to say I was shocked...

last year when we got a 12 seed after the season we had…I thought for sure we were in, then really began to sweat it out as more information came out and the weekend progressed. Another thing that would definitely help give this conference more credibility would be to get a few wins in the tourney. I dont think a team other than Memphis has won a NCAA game since the conference broke up, but then again Memphis has been the only team in a majority of years…damn.
