Quick Hits: Cornelius Brown, Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith Make NFL Practice Squads

Great news for UTEP athletics as Cornelius Brown and Da'Mon Cromartie-Smith both made opening day NFL Rosters.  Brown, a cornerback, has made the practice squad with the Indianapolis Colts.  Cromartie-Smith, was signed last week to be one of the 8 players on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad.

Brown and Cromartie-Smith bring the total number of Miners on NFL opening day rosters up to 8. The others are:

Felix is also on the practice squad.  One name Miner fans will notice missing is former Eagles safety Quintin Demps.  Unfortunately, Demps didn't make the final roster cut in Philly even after playing in 25 games over 2 seasons there.  I will update you when I find out where he lands.  For now, on Sundays and Monday, you now know who to look out for with a UTEP connection.

NFL Practice Squad rules

The way I understand it:
Practice Squad players get $5,200 weekly salary.
There’s a max of 8 PS players for any team.
The PS players are free agents who can be signed by any team.
But, if signed, they must be on the 53-man roster, not another PS.

Awesome, didn't know that.

All I knew was that there was an 8 player limit. So, if Brown/Smith make it through the season on the practice squad, they could both pull down $5200 × 16 or just over $83,000. Incredible.

I’ll definitely try to stay on top of whether these guys get promoted or if somebody makes a move on one of them. I think Q Demps will be signed somewhere, he’s shown enough promise to earn a spot somewhere when injuries happen.

Demps on a PS?

I think that they rarely sign veterans to the PS. There may be a rule about that also, which limits PS players to guys who’ve played in less than a certain number of NFL games. My guess is that Demps wouldn’t be eligible for a practice squad. And, after being a regular player for a few years, would he accept a PS role?

Didn't mean PS

Inevitably some players will be injured and I think he’ll get a shot on a 53 man roster- especially since he’s been so good on special teams (evan as a kick returner) throughout his career. At some point, I imagine somebody will be looking for a reserve safety and I’d guess he’s pretty high up the available FA list.
