Death of the Big 12? Report Says Pac-10 To Invite Six Teams From Big 12 To Join Conference - SBNation.com
Chaos! Chip Brown, a very reliable source from Orangebloods.com, is reporting that the Pac 10 plans to extend offers to six Big 12 teams to form a 16 team mega-conference. Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Colorado. CougCenter, SBN's Washington State blog, has the Pac 10 perspective here.
UPDATE: Colorado AD Mike Bohn believes that the PAC 10 will indeed invite six Big 12 schools. The Brown story just got legs... LINK HERE

WOW!!
If this actually goes down, then either the Big XII will have to disband or invite another 10 teams. It looks like four super conferences are forming…
THE PAC-10/BIG XII South
THE BIG 10/Notre Dame/Missouri/Big EAST schools
SEC/Texas A&M/ACC schools
BIG EAST REMNANTS/ACC REMNANTS
If the BIG XII wants to stay relevant they will need to invite select teams from the MWC, CUSA, and possibly BOISE STATE
The MWC might be stronger than what's left of the Big 12
If this did happen, the MWC might absorb whatever’s left of the Big 12. Chip Brown is very plugged in at Texas, if this report is true you have to credit the Pac 10 for being so aggressive. It’s very unlike them to make a move like this first.

Fodder for the feeding....
I have no doubt that this story has legs, but I don’t see TU, Aggie & Boomer going for this deal. I have no doubt that the other three (specifically Buffaloe) would be salivating for this opportunity but IMHO this would be a no-win for the others. Then again, I could be wrong….
Would PAC split into three divisions? PAC North, South and Gulf?! Very odd indeed.
They are saying 2 divisions
One would be just like the original Pac 8. It would look like this:
Division 1
1. USC
2. Cal
3. Oregon
4. Oregon State
5. Washington
6. Washington State
7. Stanford
8. UCLA
Division 2
1. Texas
2. A&M
3. Oklahoma
4. Oklahoma State
5. Texas Tech
6. Colorado
7. Arizona
8. Arizona State
It would kind of be like having 2 separate conferences, one of which looks a hell of a lot like the Big 12 South, and the other of which looks like the original Pac 10. It would keep geographic rivalries, and simple expand the presence of the league into the central time zone.
There are lots of wheels at play, and when I read this I couldn’t believe it because, IMO, it makes a lot of sense.
The elephant in the room is Texas. Texas, famously, wanted to join the Pac 10 back in 1996 but was essentially barred by the Texas legislature and politics who forced them to include A&M, Tech, and Baylor along with the ride and the Pac 10 wasn’t going to go along with that. Texas would love the academic prestige that goes along with the Pac 10. If Texas, the cash cow for the Big 12, decides to go, then I’m sure others would follow.
I think you are right about OU and A&M. I think they would much rather prefer to go to the SEC, but the problem for them is that the SEC might not want to expand unless Texas is part of the deal.
You should check out this article from the SA Express News on the formation of the Big 12.
Chip Brown used to be cover the Big 12 for the Dallas Morning News before leaving for Orangebloods. He’s very well connected, that’s why I agree with you, this story has legs. Should be exciting. This could mean a lot for UTEP. First of all, if true, the MWC might actually survive which would kill that option for UTEP. However, you’d have Baylor, Kansas, K-State, and other Big 12 holdovers all sitting around with nowhere to go. Would they consider a Texas/SWC conference with Houston, Rice? Who knows, but it will be exciting to see how it plays out.

Goodbye Current BCS...
If this were to happen, just think of the implications that this would have on the current BCS configuration. TU, Boomer and Songbirds (aka Trojan as I love that drill team in the white turtleneck sweaters) all in the same conference with only two eligible for a BCS bowl game (including the championship) and not to forget that these teams would be beating each other up all season. If I’m SEC or Big X XI I’m liking my chances of having this conference emerge. There’s something to be said for thining out the heard.
It’s amazing to think that this conference would encompass 3 time zones. Might as well add Hawai’i and call it a day…..and a half.
Addtionally, I say we grant Memphis’ wish and let them go freely to the Big East and we’ll take KU & KSU in C-USA.
Crazy Update
Colorado AD Mike Bohn went on the record and said that he has been led to believe that the Pac 10 will in fact invite 6 Big 12 schools to join the league. Giving More credence to the Chip Brown story.

Remind me again...
What exactly does Colorado bring to the table?
It figures that the most outspoken about this proposal would be the only university of the 6 that is clinging onto the coatails of the the other 5.
CU Brings the Denver media market
And an awesome mascot. Their academics are better than most in the realignment discussion too; which is one of the reasons they were immediately tossed around the PAC 10 scenarios.

Texas Longhorns being knocked out of BCS Championship by a conference foe???
Since University of TExas lives and dies by football—-what if say a USC or Oklahoma knocks out Texas in the conference championship game or they are not the top team??
I suppose it would be similar to Big 12 with Oklahoma and Nebraska knocking off Texas.
It would be interesting to see how say USC, UCLA, or a Stanford stand up to the Teasippers intimidation that has almost destroyed the Big 12.
I just do not see a PAC-16!! Too many heavy weights!!
