ChicagoHoops.com: Floyd Signs Former 3 Star Forward Michael Haynes
Brian Stinnette of Chicago Hoops is reporting that Michael Haynes, a 3 Star (Rivals) forward has committed to UTEP. Haynes had offers from Minnesota, South Florida, and Xavier and made headlines when Duke showed interest in him late in the recruiting season. Haynes visited Duke for their February game against Virginia Tech.
ESPN (Insider) shows that Haynes drew interest from Marquette, Iowa State, DePaul, and Bradley. UTEP's C-USA rival Marshall was also reportedly interested in Haynes.
Haynes was a star at Chicago's Washington High before transferring to the Heat Academy in Martinsville, Virginia. Haynes was rumored to visit UTEP last weekend along with Rashanti Harris and Stinnette says that he "loved the environment at UTEP" and was "excited to become a Miner."
I can't verify the accuracy of this report. I do know that Tim Floyd is on the recruiting trail right now and we should expect some official announcements when he gets back to El Paso. One thing is certain: Tim Floyd is being aggressive on the recruiting trail. Haynes had offers from marquee programs in powerful conferences. If Floyd has signed him, along with Rashanti Harris, it would be huge for the program on a national recruiting level.

All I can say is....
FREAKING WOW! I knew Coach Floyd could coach and recruit, but this is astonishing…of course if it turns out to be true. Given all the names that keep pouring in, I wonder who will not be around this fall i.e. Moultrie (amongst others)? Otherwise, I don’t know where all the scholarship space is coming from?! Regardless, if much of what has been published holds true, we will have a gigantic and deep team! Thoughts?
The NCAA restricts Men's Basketball Programs to 13 scholarships
Remember Marcus Ruppel transferred in January. Derrick Caracter left early. Eric Moreland was given a financial aid package, not a scholarship.
The Miners have 10 seniors on next year’s roster (Culpepper, Britten, Gordon, McCulley, Munoz, Polk, Portalatin, Stone, Strong, and Williams). I’m not sure if Munoz even has a scholarship (same thing with Tyler Tafoya from El Paso High).
Harris probably won’t be eligible next year since he practiced with Georgia State this season. So, Floyd will probably find a way to get him to UTEP and not give him a scholarship until next year. In 2011, Floyd will have scholarships to burn and I’m sure he’s capitalizing on that right now.
As for players leaving, I hate to speculate too much. There are lots of rumors involving Arnett and Polk right now. I don’t see either of them leaving. Polk is a senior and it wouldn’t do him any good to sit out a year (by transferring) and I don’t think he will get any $ at all overseas right now either. Moultrie wants to play in the NBA. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tested the waters, but he’d be foolish to sign an agent right now. Transferring is out of the question because it would delay his NBA dreams by two years.

So what's the end game?
First thanks for the breakdown, that’s what I was looking for. With all the names pouring in and out I, as I’m sure many others, needed someone to put it all together in a single post. Secondly then, how many “rides” does Coach Floyd presumably have in his pocket right now – with Harris on delay for a year (maybe); Bohannan (one from Ruppel), Haynes (one from Caracter); Korcheck (unknown but would ideally get one), Polee (unknown/unlikely, but would also get one) Moreland on FA; who or what am I missing? I know this is all just speculation at this point, but just trying to get an idea if there’s any room left after these or does this do it if all remained as illustrated above.
It's hard to figure because I can't find out who is and who isn't on scholarship
I guess I should have thought about it this way:
The best indicator of available scholarships is 4. That’s the number of guys that signed LOI’s under Barbee (Korcheck, Bohannon, Stearns, and Curry). Then, DC left so that would give Floyd 5 rides total to give out right now. That means a few more guys on the roster right now aren’t on scholarship; I just don’t know who they are. So with five to give, Bohannon, Harris, and Haynes could all get one. Assume Korcheck has one (we don’t know if he’s still coming). That leaves one for Polee or a wildcard that we don’t know about.

Well done...
That definetly clarifies it a bit. Of course this specific scenario doesn’t include a loss of any additional players (Moultrie/Polk) as we discussed earlier. I guess in the end, we will know when it’s “officially” released. I’m guessing some time early next week. Thanks again for shake down, I think you’re pretty darn close to being on the money!
This just feels right...
Floyd started with the Miners almost 3 weeks ago, right? No disrespect to Coach TB or BG, but if these signings stand up and turn out to be confirmed I couldn’t of scripted Floyd’s start any better. Now I hope Polk and Moultrie do the right thing and stay, but Floyd isn’t taking any chances. Great job! Now if he gets Polee down to El Paso, there might be a statue going up soon. I know a lot can happen, but this is an exciting time to be a Miner fan and football season is still 5 months away. Great job by Floyd and staff!

Agreed!.....
It’s amazing what one can do when they actually put their heart and soul into something or some place (UTEP) they actually believe in. Obvious difference from the last two decades of coaches we’ve had looking for a ride onto their next gig. I agree with you completely though, no dig on TB, BG, DS or any others, they did what they needed to move onto their dream jobs. The difference is….this is Coach Floyds. Is it November yet?!
I think Culpepper and a few other Miners are close to graduating...
That can free up another scholarship

Hmmmm.....
I suppose you’re right. If we have some early graduations, that does free up a ride or two without affecting eligibility…potentially. Good call.
Whats the deadline for Arnett?
I need just a couple of questions cleared up…When is the deadline for Arnett to declare, isnt it April 26th? And Arnett can go into the draft without an agent correct? Id just like for this situation with AM to be resolved already, there’s alot of rumors flying around. He’s been one of my favorites players since he got to campus and I feel he can make some big strides next year, but he has to do whats best for him, I just wish he’d give some sort of indication.
April 25th at 11:59 pm.
At that point, Arnett can enter, without an agent. The deadline to make up his mind is May 8th. By May 8th, he must withdraw from the draft or go for it. It used to be in June, but this season the NBA changed up the deadlines which has caused some outrage. LINK.
There are rumors, and I agree, Arnett has to do what he has to do personally. As a Miner fan, you’d be crazy not to want him back next year.
