The First Annual Rushies: Mens Basketball Edition

There's no denying, the Most Hated Player Award should be named after long-time Miner nemesis Danny Ainge.

There's no denying, the Most Hated Player Award should be named after long-time Miner nemesis Danny Ainge.

Now that the door is shut on the C-USA Regular Season, I think it's time to give out some end-of-the year C-USA Awards.  I thought it would be a good idea to get some community input on what the categories would be.  Then, starting after the C-USA Tournament, we can vote on one Rushie a day.   Please feel free to come up with new categories and to nominate players for any of the  categories you come up with or that I have listed here.

I'll probably choose the best 5-6 categories based on the responses I get. I will do a write up each day stating each player's, coaches, or teams arguments for the award, and the community will select a winner via poll.

Here is a list of some of the award categories I have so far.

1.  The Mark McCall Award (Best Dunker)

2.   Best C-USA Game

3.  The Bears Award for the Best League Coach

4.  The Danny Ainge Award (Most Hated Player)

5.  The Bad News Barnes Award (Best league post player)

6.  Team Weaksauce Award (goes to the team with the worst non-conference schedule)

Star-divide

6.  Best C-USA Play

7.  The Hardaway Award (Best league guard)

8.  The Best Glue-Guy Award (best player who doesn't score a lot, but does everything else)

9.  The Culpepper Award (Best individual dunk)

Want to see a different category?  Nominate it in the comments.

Glue Guy Award should be named after Roy Smallwood

Other ideas…

The Filiberto Rivera Award (Top Transfer player): UTEP’s had so many great transfers over the years so you can choose many other players for this category, but Fili had one of the most memorable careers in UTEP history.

The Antoine Gillespie Award (Best 3 point shooter or outside threat): Antoine, along with Tim Hardaway, and more recently Chris Craig, Miguel Ayala, and Randy Culpepper, is one of the greatest 3 point shooters ever to play at UTEP.

The Bobbie Joe Hill Award (Most Underrated Player): Bobbie Joe was perhaps best known for leading Texas Western to the 1966 NCAA Championship, but he was a player that Coach Haskins recruited to lead his offense. He was the best player on an underrated team full or overlooked players.

The Stefon Jackson Award (Best Scorer): Stefon was a very effective scorer. His nickname was DJ (Draining Jumpers), but was capable of scoring from anywhere on the court.

Awesome Suggestions

Roy Smallwood was one of my all-time favorite Miners. The guy played hard every time he took the floor.

How about

The ANtonio Davis Award for the guy most likely to play for 10+ NBA teams

Also, can most hated be a coach? I kinda want it to be Mike Davis for whining after the UAB Game.

The Microwave award

Best 6th man (comes in off the bench and “lights it up”).
