UTEP Adds Stony Brook University to 2011 Football Slate; 2011 Opponents Finalized

Stony Brook University, a small FCS school in Rochester, New York, announced yesterday that they will open the 2011 football season on September 3, 2011 at the Sun Bowl against the UTEP Miners.  The addition of Stony Brook finalizes UTEP's 2011 non-conference football schedule which will include a home game against the Mountain West's Colorado State Rams and a road game against the Big East's South Florida Bulls.  The Miners will also travel up the road to take on New Mexico State in the Sonic Battle of 1-10.

The schedule fits along with Bob Stull's stated goal of scheduling one FCS team, one BCS conference school, and one FBS but not BCS conference opponent.  Below is a chart of UTEP's scheduled opponents through 2018.  Note that the Miners still owe the Kansas Jayhawks a game in Lawrence but that game which would have been played next season was moved to accomodate the Big 12 school's new nine game conference schedule following the departure of Nebraska and Colorado to the Big 10 and Pac 10 respectively.  The Miners added a money game at South Florida next season to replace the Jayhawks.

UTEP has future road dates at Wisconsin and Texas and has home and home deals with the MWC"s New Mexico Lobos and Colorado State Rams

not to be that but

but Stony Brook plays football? I know the school when I went to Iona and we swam against them, but that is about it.

I had no idea either-

Apparently they are trying to become FCS and played at South Florida last season too. I had to google the school to make sure it was the one I was thinking of. I do like the CSU/USF additions.

Stony Brook vs. Iona Football

We actually were considered one of the nails in the coffin of Iona football.

In their final season as a football team, Stony Brook decimated Iona by over 60.

This was the second time we helped a football to its doom. We took down St. John’s by a wide margin before they dropped football as well.

Wrong info about Stony Brook

There is some wrong info regarding Stony Brook. Stony Brook is not in Rochester, NY but about 378 miles southeast on Long Island. I wouldn’t call Stony Brook small as it has 26000 students.

Stony Brook

To clarify on the Stony Brook Seawolves

They’re a young D1 program, only in 11 years now. However, they’ve grown substantially in the past 5 years or so. They boast a full-FCS 63 scholly roster full of FBS transfers, prospects from throughout the US (Florida, California, Texas, Kansas, etc..), and have won a share of the Big South conference title for the past two seasons. Their coach – Chuck Priore – is a very strong recruiter, and is best known for his massive win streak while coach at D3 Trinity College (CT). Athletically our budget is larger than many FBS schools, and seems to be on a continuing upward trajectory as our AD has publically stated FBS intentions.

As an academic school they’re also young (53 years old), but SBU is already ranked as one of the top research universities in the US. In the London Times rankings it’s #75 in the world, beating out Dartmouth, Georgetown, and most of the Big X. It’s attendance is 26K and growing yearly. It’s also one of the only schools in the US to control two national laboratories.

Football-wise, I don’t see UTEP losing to SBU. The reduced scholarships make running with a well coached FBS team difficult from an endurance standpoint. However, this isn’t a pushover FCS game. Stony Brook returns a majority of its offense (including an All American RB who did damage against South Florida this year), and has a few key FBS transfers that will make it competitive. Overall, they’re a good opponent.
