Bernie Olivas: "UTEP to Sun Bowl Would Take Much Negotiation"

Today KROD's sports talk featured a segment with Sun Bowl Exec Bernie Olivas on the possibilities for the Sun Bowl. Among them still include a possible Notre Dame-Miami matchup. However, we won't know much until after this weekend. A lot is riding on whether or not the PAC-10 will qualify a school for the bowl. Washington and Oregon State are the two still alive to become bowl eligible. If neither wins the door is opened to many possibilities including Boise St, UTEP, and Notre Dame. Although, considering both the WAC and C-USA have only enough teams to fulfill their bowl requirements, getting either Boise or UTEP would take some negotiation and trade.

Nice update- too bad too

Its kind of the perfect storm this season. Never would UTEP to the Sun seem even remotely plausible, but if Toledo somehow ends up coming to town, I think it could actually make sense to have the hometown team play. Obviously, contractual obligations will make it all but impossible. It will also be nice for UTEP players to get the true bowl experience and another week in New Orleans is a nice reward for them. But wow, a sellout Sun Bowl against Miami would be good TV as opposed to 30,000 people more concerned with the cost of beer than the name of the Toledo quarterback.

I don't think this is far from happening...

I think no decision will be definitively made until after this Saturday’s matchups. I still wouldn’t be suprised if somehow this panned out.

UTEP in Sun Bowl

Ain’t gonna happen! Bottom line: CBS and the SB Association want to bring out-of-towners to El Paso to spend thier $$$ and network needs larger TV market audience for the game.

Every other year I would absolutely agree with that on both fronts-

But when Toledo started being tossed out, it seemed to me it might be worthwhile to explore UTEP as a more viable candidate. If Temple (in Philly) or Louisville are available, I think the Sun will be pleased to match either with Miami.

Agreed...

Lousiville is the best bet. Make no mistake, Toledo will not play in the Sun Bowl. This is a lose lose. No upside to Toledo in the Sun. I could be wrong, but that would be a first. haha
