I just wanted to post a quick congratulations for a local kid coming back to El Paso and landing the HC job at Cathedral. The whole Cathedral community, and El Paso in general, can only benefit from Omar's love of the game, dedication, hard work and experience.
I remember a short little kid in the 4th Grade at Blessed Sacrament School in Northeast El Paso, always pestering us older kids to let him play. Eventually we relented because short stuff could actually hold his own. Everywhere he went he had his basketball in hand, practicing, whether with us older kids or in his driveway, shooting at the basket his father put up for him probably as soon as he could walk, which is probably when Omar first fell in love with the game.
Fast forward a few years and that same kid is playing his heart out for the UTEP Miners, living a dream...and sort of letting all of us hometown El Paso boys vicariously live out our dreams of playing basketball for the Orange n Blue. As a graduate of both Blessed Sacrament and Cathedral i have to say that I can't think of a better person to lead the Irish to victories while teaching them how to be responsible, hard working young men -- while at the same time teaching respect for the game and the opponent. Most importantly, however, he will forge in them the courage to always chase their dreams. Omar certainly did.
Congratulations Omar!
Viva La Cate!
