AP Writer Alicia Caldwell has another excellent article on UTEP athletics out. Mike Price is sounding very reflective going into 2010. Will this be CMP's last hurrah?

Whew. Great news for the UTEP Miners as Donald Buckram's knee injury is only a bruise- no ligament damage. He could play opening night against UAPB.

Picks Up! Miner Rush's C-USA Football Weekend Viewing Guide

The season is here and what better way to kick it all off than a  night game (tonight!) featuring one of the C-USA's finest on national television?   Southern Miss isn't the only C-USA squad on tonight either; actually four league schools kick off their seasons tonight.

There are some great games this holiday weekend.  Southern Miss and South Carolina and Texas Tech vs. SMU are two where elite C-USA teams will have a grand stage to show the rest of the country that there is some talent, and depth, in this league.  Marshall and Ohio State?  Well, not so much.

Each week, just before the first C-USA game is played, I will use this post to provide the Miner Nation with a viewing guid of league games so you know when to set the DVR.  This will also be the post where I, and you, can make our Picks for each weeks games.

DayMatchupKickoff (MST)TV?
Thursday Marshall at Ohio State 5:30 PM B10 Network
Southern Miss at South Carolina 5:30 PM ESPN
Florida Atlantic at UAB 6:00 PM
Southeastern Louisiana at Tulane 6:00 PM

The UTEP Miners close out the season on the road against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane.  A few months ago I wrote an extensive preview on the Golden Hurricane and I asked the Tulsa World's Eric Bailey for his insight on the squad.  he Bottom Line was this:

UTEP's Donald Buckram Injures Knee at Practice; Undergoing MRI

Mike Price:  "It looks like the injury is not serious at this point."

Miner fans across the country didn't want to believe it when we heard it.  Donald Buckram carted off the practice field?  Possible knee injury?  Is this a nightmare?  What day is it?

Nobody knows the severity of the injury yet, so no reason to immediately panic or hit the red button on UTEP's 2010 football season before a single down is played in a game.  What we do know is that Buckram will have an MRI tonight and UTEP will have the results tomorrow.

Bret Bloomquist just posted an update on his blog on the injury.  Bloomquist cautions the Miner Nation to resist the immediate need to ask, "How did the coaches let this happen?"  He writes:

This was just a fluke happenstance, something that occasionally happens even in a non-tackling drill. The drill Buckram was participating in was the type of work any tailback needs to go through to get ready to play a game, the type of drill every player in America does many times on a typical Wednesday practice.

Head Coach told MI "We're kind of in no man's land.  He added "it looks like the injury is not serious at this point."

No official word yet, but MI's Chris Avila just tweeted out that UTEP's Donald Buckram, the 4th leading rusher in the nation last year, was carted off of UTEP's practice field today. Avila notes that "early word is that it might be a knee injury."

UPDATE: Yahoo! Sports reports that Buckram will undergo an MRI tonight and UTEP will have the results tomorrow morning.

UTEP Athletics has finally released the Miners non-conference basketball schedule for the coming season. Don't forget that the Miners will also play the winner/loser of the Michigan or Syracuse game in the Legends Classic. Other than the squads I've mentioned, it's mostly cream puffs. Of course, UTEP has a home and home with NMSU right around Thanksgiving.

Predicting the Season Game 11: The UTEP Miners at the Arkansas Razorbacks

Case Keenum is good. Kyle Padron and G.J. Kinne are too. Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett, however, could be the #1 pick in next April's NFL Draft. . (AP Photo/Beth Hall)

It's not often the Miners play a non-conference game in November, especially at an SEC stadium.  Heading to Fayetteville to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks is never an easy task.  This season might be more difficult than others as the Hogs have become a very trendy pick to take the SEC East.  Why the hype?  Well, it all starts with quarterback Ryan Mallett.  A transfer from Michigan, Mallett has all the tools, measurable, and upside to make Mel Kiper, Jr. and Todd McShay get amped up in April.  He's 6'5", 240 lbs, and has a cannon for an arm.  Mallett's favorite receiver, Greg Childs, also returns.

The Hogs should also be better in year two of Bobby Petrino's tenure as head coach.  In his first season, Arkansas finished  8-5 and defeated Conference USA Champion East Carolina in the Liberty Bowl (20-17).  Arkansas blew out Texas A&M and Auburn and lost to Florida and LSU by only three points a piece.
